Chapter 23 by Manbear Manbear

What is it about this leader that tips you off?

It's Petroculus Har’Amaden himself

The tall dark-haired man's silhouette is unmistakable, even in the flickering light of the torches that his men are holding. Petroculus Har’Amaden is a handsome man; he is built like Adonis, with a strong clean-shaven jaw and an aura of power that makes people trust him and his judgement. He was also one of the most recognizable men in not just Athenapolis but all the Helenic cities. When the magnitude of his betrayal became known in Heliopolis hundreds of fliers were drawn with his likeness and circulated in all of the city states.

"Fuck!" Marcos articulates your exact thought as the four of you crouch in the shadows of the wall a long spear-throw from where the group of armed men are gathered. "It's fucking Har'Amaden and we're outnumbered three to one."

"Worse than that." Antonios corrects the hoplite as another half-dozen men appear dragging a rotund figure dressed in a disheveled tunic. The balding figure is thrown to the ground at the feet of Har'Amaden and lands in a awkward tangle of splayed limbs.

"That's Rastus." Whispers Sophia softly from behind you. There was really no need to whisper, from this distance you have a hard time hearing what Petroculus is saying to the cowering Rastus and he is making no attempt to keep his voice down. There is really only one thing that a man like Har'Amaden would want with Rastus, and you punch at the grass at your feet in frustration.

"He's going to take Amara and there's not a damn thing we can do to stop him!" You voice your displeasure. "What I'd give for one of those Galatian bowmen just now. I'd even put up with the stench of bear-grease if he planted a shaft in that bastard's intestines and -" Antonios places his hand on your shoulder interrupting your ranting.

"Something's not right." He tells you, and as you watch the scene unfold you have to agree with his assessment of the situation. The overweight nobleman groveling at Petroculus' feet doesn't seem capable of defying his captors, but Har'Amaden and his men are becoming angrier by the minute, kicking and slapping at Rastus each time he answers them. Finally with a short exclamation of frustration you see the Great Betrayer place his gladius on the folds of skin at Ratus' neck as the man squealed like a pig he slowly pushed the point of his sword into the man's neck until Rastus was silenced.

Maybe you should have tried to hit Petroculus with a spear when you had a chance, because without a second thought for the dead man at his feet he moved through the gates of the estate shouting orders to his men. The crisp commands leave no doubt that he is indeed here for Amara of Heliopolis and he made it very plain to his men that if she was hidden somewhere in the grounds that he wanted her, and wanted her alive.

"That's interesting." Antonios had a gift for understatement. From the inside the riverside estate you hear more panicked pleading as Har'Amaden's men find other members of the household to interrogate.

"What do you want to do now, Sir?" Asks Antonios. "If we stay here they'll eventually find us."

You could slip into the compound and join the search for Amara, wait in a safe spot and see what happens or head back to Lady Sophia's town house and rejoin your men.

What do you want to do?
