Chapter 6
by Lisa
What did I do?
I talked to Claire
My curiosity about what might have happened to Crystal won from playing the game on my phone. I put my phone in my skirt pocket, locked the register and went outside. Claire was standing on the corner of the parking lot, blowing a bubble with her chewing gum.
I walked up to her and said, "Hey, Claire, right?"
She popped the bubble and chewed her gum while looking me over, "Yeah, why you ask? I dunt do girls."
I shook my head. "I don't want... ehr... your services. I work here," I said while pointing at the store.
She gave a quick smile, "Oh, yer the new night girl?"
"Yes," I said, then took a breath, "I heard something has happened to Crystal."
"Uh-huh, yeah, something did," she said, then continued to chew her gum.
"Do you know what happened? People talk, you know, I heard she might have been taken by one of the Lost," I said in an attempt to get her to tell me.
She shrugged, "Why ye wanna know?"
"I thought you were friends," I started, "and well, since it happened around here, I'd like to know if we're all in danger."
"First of all, Crystal is not my friend. We just happen to work here, okay?" she said while placing her hands on her hips, "Second, Crystal owed people a lot of money, stupid meth-head. People dunt like it if ye dunt pay."
"Okay, sorry, I assumed you were friends," I said quickly. "So this was about money?"
"Uh-huh, couple of dem Latino boys I reckon she bought meth from. I'd seen them before, ye know. Always givin me the weird look. I dunt do no meth, but they were always lookin funny."
"Aren't you scared?" I asked.
She nodded slowly, "B'tween ye and me, yeah, pretty scared. Thinkin of moving to Sandy's Gas Station or by the 24-7 next to it."
"Moving there? Wait, you lived with Crystal?" I asked a little confused, although as soon as I said it, I realized what she meant.
She laughed and shook her head, "No dummy, new working place. No Latinos come there, just regular Joes. 'though it's closer to the cops."
"Oooh," I said and smiled, thinking about how this might play straight into my brand new career on the side, "I'm sure it's safer there. Not as isolated as here."
"Now ye got it, missy, and if I were ye, I find another place to work too. Soon they'll be robbin the store," she said while looking at me intently.
I looked surprised, "This store hasn't been robbed in years, Ace, yes, but here..."
She lifted her dirty top and showed me the blood stained bandage patch on her side, "That's what they did to me. Thinkin I was Crystal."
"But you don't look like Crystal at all!" I said.
"Dinna matter to dem, said it was a warning, when I told 'em. Anyways, I reckon it's gettin quiet now, can ye bring me a bottle of Nogo?" she asked.
"Sure," I said and started to turn.
She grabbed my arm and pushed a $10 bill in my hand, "Shuld cover it, right?"
"Yes, I think so," then went to the store. Nogo was a relatively cheap vodka and it was popular with drunks and homeless alike. I grabbed a bottle and put it in a paper bag, then went out to bring it to her.
"Thank ye," she said when I gave her the bottle. She slipped the top of the paper bag down, opened the bottle, then took a swig before closing it again. "Right, that'll help me get home. See ya, missy, be careful."
"See ya, Claire," I said and watched her walk towards town for a moment, then headed back inside.
I rang up Claire's purchase, then grabbed a can of Sprunk from the fridge for myself. I resumed playing on my phone, it was only 3:30am. After a little while I got bored with the game and started to browse through a fashion magazine, wondering if I should upgrade (or rather downgrade, depending on your view) my clothing. My usual style was consisting of tops and mid length skirts mostly, some pants, a few blouses, but nothing really sexy or slutty. I didn't want to appeal to the wrong kind of potential customers and I certainly didn't want to look like I was begging to be ****. I also didn't want to work street corners, for the same reasons. The more I leafed back and forth through the magazine, the harder I found it to decide on new clothes. I put the magazine away and decided that I needed to go shopping on my next trip to Los Santos. I grabbed some cleaning materials and began to clean the counter, not being able to think of a better way to pass the time. Amber -the evening shift girl- usually did a good cleaning job, I figured that she was a little OCD, because the evenings were busy enough to keep her occupied.
I had started on the first fridge when someone came in. I heard him saying, "Hey," before I was up and saw the scruffy looking guy. Scruffy was normal for Sandy Shores, if someone was wearing an immaculate business suit they'd be regarded with high suspicions. I walked up to the counter and friendly asked what I could do for him.
"A whiskey for me mum," he said while placing a $20 bill on the counter.
I shrugged, "I don't know your mum's taste in whiskey. Which one?"
He looked a little panic stricken, "Ehr, John knows. The one with the mountain on it."
I chuckled as I grabbed a bottle, then placed it in front of him on the counter, "Mount, you mean?"
He nodded and smiled, "Yeah, that one."
"Anything else?" I asked while putting the bottle in a paper bag, then rang up the amount.
He shrugged, then after a moment said, "Ehm... You ehm... Do you ehm?"
I looked quizzically at him.
What did I do?
