Chapter 28 by Rasun Rasun

What's next?

Lingering Chains

Setting:

The kitchen of the Charlie family home, a warm and inviting space filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals. Jamal stands by the sink, his body clothed and his movements more confident, yet his actions still dictated by the remnants of his past enslavement. David watches from the doorway, his heart heavy with concern for Jamal's continued struggles and determination to help him break free from the lingering chains that still bind him.

Characters:

Jamal Smith: The 18-year-old black boy, still grappling with the remnants of his past enslavement, now navigating the challenges of reclaiming his autonomy and dignity.

David Charlie: The young man who witnessed Jamal's suffering and vowed to make a difference, now confronted with the reality of Jamal's continued struggles and the implications for his journey towards freedom.

Scene:

The camera opens to the kitchen of the Charlie family home, where Jamal stands by the sink, his movements hesitant as he waits for permission to drink water. His hands tremble with uncertainty, the weight of the **** choker collar around his neck a constant reminder of the chains that still bind him.

Jamal: (softly) Master David, may I have some water, please?

David's heart clenches at the sound of Jamal's request, his mind flooded with a mixture of sadness and determination. He knows that breaking free from the remnants of his past enslavement will be a long and arduous journey, but he is committed to helping Jamal reclaim his autonomy and dignity.

David: (gently) Jamal, you don't need to ask for permission to drink water. You're free to do whatever you want here.

Jamal's eyes widen in disbelief, the concept of autonomy and freedom still foreign to him.

Jamal: (uncertainly) But... but Master Nathan always made me ask for permission. It's... it's all I know.

David steps forward to stand beside Jamal, his expression one of unwavering determination.

David: (firmly) I know, Jamal. But things are different here. You're not a **** anymore. You're a part of our family, and you deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.

With trembling hands, Jamal reaches out and fills a glass with water, his movements hesitant yet determined.

Jamal: (softly) I understand, Master David. Thank you.

David watches silently as Jamal takes a sip of water, his heart heavy with the realization that the scars of Jamal's past run deep.

David: (thoughtfully) Jamal, can I ask you something?

Jamal nods, his eyes filled with curiosity.

Jamal: (tentatively) Of course, Master David.

David takes a deep breath, his mind racing with thoughts of how to help Jamal break free from the remnants of his past enslavement.

David: (earnestly) Why do you still call me "Master David"? And why do you... why do you lap water and eat like a dog?

Jamal: (quietly) It's... it's all I know, Master David. I've been... I've been conditioned to obey without question, to... to see myself as less than human.

David's heart aches at Jamal's words, realizing the depth of the trauma that still grips him.

David: (sympathetically) I understand, Jamal. But you are not less than human. You are a person, just like me. And people drink water from glasses and eat with utensils, not like animals.

Jamal: (softly) I... I want to learn, Master David. I want to be... be more than just a ****.
