Chapter 11
by Manbear
What does she do? Run or wait?
Trust the young nurse
Samantha (the Rhiain part of her especially) badly wants to just get away. To crawl into the dusty rabbit hole and escape this nightmare, but she knows that if she runs now it could only be interpreted as an admission of guilt. Samantha was the victim here; she was not going to run from some scumbag janitor ****. Not as long as there were people willing to help her.
Samantha returns the access panel to the wall clumsily; her hands fumbling with the screws now that Rhiain is no longer helping, but even on her own it doesn't take long to get the job done. She climbs to her feet, replacing the multi-tool in her pocket and waits to see what happens next.
A look through the small glass window makes her question her choice; she can see a pair of security officers in a brown uniforms striding to the nurse’s station. There is no mistaking the pair for anything other than security. They wore padded vests and carried dangerous looking sidearms strapped to harnesses.
Samantha watches anxiously as she sees the men speaking to the nurses before one heads back up the hall and the other approaches the small room where she waits. When the door opens, she gives no resistance but finds herself twisted around and feels her wrists secured by some sort of high-tech handcuffs (Igutech PR-430's, Rhiain helpfully provides. Personal restraint devices used by both IS forces and private security, no way to get these off without a lot of specialized equipment.) Her pockets are emptied and the contents whisked away.
Only then is she marched out of the cramped nurses’ waiting room and out into the nurse’s station. The first thing she sees is the other security officer escorting her attacker now dressed in a hospital gown that barely fit his barrel chest and thick arms. As soon as the crop-haired man sees Samantha he tries to twist free from the attending security officer and spits out a string of foul sounding words that Samantha cannot decipher.
To her left Samantha can see the two night duty nurses standing nervously; the younger one meets her gaze as she is pushed through the hall.
"It'll be OK." The nurse tells her quietly but then looks away quickly before Samantha can respond. Samantha hopes she is right, neither the impersonal treatment of the guard nor the firm grasp of the manacles on her wrists are at all reassuring.
"We'll take them both to the holding pens." One of the guards with a few extra stripes on his arm informs the nurses. "Let the brass sort it all out down there in the morning." Samantha felt a combination of irritation and rising panic as she realized that she was going to spend the rest of the night locked up even though she had done nothing at all wrong.
"Wait!" A second voice stops the guards as they take their first steps. It is a voice of authority, one that is used to being instantly obeyed and the two security guards stop in mid stride. There is something familiar about the deep baritone timbre of the voice, but Samantha is too stunned by the sequence of recent events to place tall dark-haired man in an expensive tailored suit who steps between her and the head of security.
"Nothing important here Doctor Marque." The senior officer identifies the handsome man for her, "This pretty lady and that one got into a little tussle. We'll take care of it, Sir." The officer is both respectful and eager to show the doctor that he could handle the situation but to Samantha's relief the Doctor wasn't ready to wash his hands of the situation.
"You two bring that one down to questioning." He said in a voice that was both calming and authoritative. "This one is my patient, if you need to question her you can let me know through my link."
Samantha can see that the security officers are not happy with the doctor's request, but that neither of them wants to provoke him by disobeying what was clearly a command no matter how politely and reasonably stated. Hopefully she watches the senior officer knowing that any dissent would have to come from him.
Does the officer protest the unusual request?
