Chapter 3 by redrooster redrooster

What the hell is going on?

Nobody knows but maybe Maggie get a clue at the morgue.

Maggie was finishing typing up her report when the lieutenant came and sat on the edge of her desk. “I’ve asked Doctor Chen to drop by in the morning and check Ted out,” he said.

“We should just go down to his cell and check his pulse now but I just can’t face it,” Maggie replied. “When I cuffed him and **** him into the car, he just felt so cold. So…dead.”

“I’ll go down and check his pulse myself Maggie. There must be a rational explanation.” The lieutenant paused and pulled out a packet of cigarettes before remembering the office was now no smoking. Maggie could see he was hesitating.

“Go on Mike, what do you want to say?” she asked.

“You’ve done a long shift Maggie. It’s time for you to go home but you know we’re short staffed at the moment…” his voice trailed off but after a moment he went on, “I’ve just had a call from the morgue. A woman who died today sat up on the bench and started talking. The thing is, they were doing her autopsy at the time. They’ve also got three car crash victims who’ve been dead for days, banging on the draws they’re locked in”. He sighed. “I’d like you to take Collins and go find out what’s happening.”

Tony Collins was a rookie cop who had joined the station six months ago. Maggie liked him and his sense of humor. They had even enjoyed a couple of dates before Maggie decided that mixing work and pleasure might make her life too complicated. That and the fact that she was seven years older than him. Tony had taken it with good grace. They had worked together since and still got on well.

Maggie pulled the patrol car up in front of the station. Tony climbed in beside her. He was a tall and athletic with a good tan. As Maggie turned out onto the road he pulled the pump action shotgun from the rack behind them and started to check it over. “What’s this talk about the dead coming back to life?” he asked.

By the time they drew up outside the grey concrete morgue, Maggie had told him almost the full story. “So we could find this place full of zombie’s,” Tony said as he climbed out of the car carrying the shotgun.

“Could be,” said Maggie, drawing her pistol. Maggie had mentioned nothing about Ted’s attempted **** and foul behaviour, simply describing his attack on Martha as an ****. Somehow she was too embarrassed to acknowledge out loud what had happened. “Just watch out. Ted wasn’t a just a zombie. He knew what was going on. When I shot him he told me that I couldn’t kill him”. Maggie shuddered. The night sky was bright with stars and a scent of jasmine carried on the slight breeze. A car horn honked in the distance but the streets all around were quiet. With a sense of trepidation, Maggie wished she was at home.

Tony was watching his boss but never would have guessed at her nerves. She maintained her usual cool demeanour. He found his eyes taking in her figure, not for the first time but when he caught himself imagining what her breasts were like, he swallowed and averted his eyes.

Maggie had not noticed and was about to press the intercom when the main door swung open. “You’d better come quick,” said a young, slightly overweight attendant, “all hell’s braking loose”.

What's going on in the DEAD center of town?
