Chapter 7

What does she want?
You're not exactly sure
"Yes?" I said, with a tone that was a bit more annoyed than I wanted it to come out.
"Sorry, were you doing something?" Mary said.
Her voice sounded like she was trying to sound a little remorseful. It was convincing too, I would've believed it if I hadn't overheard anything.
"I was about to go upstairs and watch whatever show they're all watching upstairs", I said, resigning myself to another talk.
"Do you have a second?' she asked.
My gut said to say "NO", with big capital letters and everything. However, I was too much of a nice person to say that, and plus, what would I use as an excuse if she questioned me? So, naturally, I responded with "Sure, what do you need?"
"I was just going to ask how you and Becca were doing," she opened with.
That was a bit of a weird thing to ask. Mary had never given two shits about mine and Becca's relationship before.
"Good, I guess?" I responded.
"I mean, it must be a bit better than good if she's staying in the room with you for these whole two months", Mary said.
Did she just come in here to poke fun at me?
"I guess", I said, with a bit of a chuckle, unsure what Mary was trying to pull here.
"I wish I could have that sort of relationship with someone. I thought I would have it with Chris, until Grace told me about him fucking some cheerleader behind my back," she said.
"Well, you just gotta keep going," I said. "Don't get discouraged with Chris, or any of your previous boyfriends that have turned out to be duds."
That was a bit of a bad statement to make, given the circumstances, but fuck it. You didn't want to seem off.
"Thank you, John", she said, a few tears welling up as she said that.
She wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug. Given her short stature, her forehead rested up against my shoulder. She stood there, quite literally crying on my shoulder, for quite a while. I guess she really needed someone to talk to about the whole mess that she had gotten in. Sure, she had talked to Grace about it, but Grace wasn't really a person someone could confide in with their problems.
"I just really needed to talk to somebody about it," Mary said. "And you're a great person to talk to about this."
"Well, I'm available anytime if you need to talk," I said.
She let you go, and then walked out of your room.
No more people knocking on the door, what to do?
