Chapter 34

Cast the spell?
Cast the Ward
You begin to pour magic into the ward, the air around you beginning to hum with the sheer magical energy concentrated in such a small space. You slowly push your mind out, spreading tendrils of magic through the room. A tendril finds a wall, and runs into the stone, flowing through the building blocks, surrounding the entire room.
You can sense the entire room, your magic filling the walls around you. You push the spell further and the wards flow further through the pool, spreading through the walls, through the floors, filling the entire building with potent magic. Your sense of the entire building slowly grows to completion as the magic runs through every wall and floor.
The magic closes over the pool, completely surrounding and filling it. With the boundaries for the wards set you begin the second stage of the spell. Using some of the magic filling the walls you warp the stone itself, forming the arcane symbols that will bind and sustain the ward. Strange curling shapes form on the wall before you, a scene you know is repeated over every part of the pool, both inside and outside. You feel the magic grow less and less strained, and more stable as the runes form the spell.
Suddenly the symbols completely form. With a massive surge the magic is ripped out of your grasp, bound to the runes covering the walls. The powerful ward bursts into existence, covering the entire building in a complete layer of deadly magical protection, and also lacing through the insides of the building, following walls and sealing doorways.
A red glow rushes through the air around you, shimmering with power. As quickly as it came the glow disappears, returning the room to how it looked before, with the addition of faintly glowing runes covering the walls.
You reach down and pick up a cushion, and throw it through the open doorway. A flash rushes through the air as the pillow passes through the doorway, and the pillow blasts apart in a shower of brightly glowing fluff and flames. The runes directly surrounding the door glow brightly for a second before fading back to their dull shimmer.
You look to the left, directly into the wary and slightly scared face of Evie. You remember that she has no idea what you were doing just now, all she saw was some weird symbols cover the walls, then you throwing a pillow into a doorway and it exploding. You begin to explain things to her, telling her how you created a ward to protect the pair of you from demons. She nods, though her eyes remain wary, obviously unconvinced that she will not meet the same fate as the pillow.
You walk through the doorway to prove to her that nothing will happen; the wards are set to exempt both you and her, and kill everything else. She hesitantly follows you into the next room, again looking warily from the runed walls to the floating eyeball constructs above.
Suddenly her eyes light up and she quickly walks over to one of the broken vending machines, and hungrily pulls out a couple of bars, ripping them open and ravenously devouring them. You smile at the girl, and walk over to grab one of your own. You pull open the packaging and begin to eat.
You look around, what should your next move be?
What do you decide?
