Chapter 31 by philipcollin philipcollin

What do you decide to do?

Build a construct

You focus your mind, picturing your intended product, and begin to pour magic into creating it. A smoky form begins to take shape before you, a rounded centre with two long poles on either side. A large eyeball begins to form in the middle, in the midst of a mechanical mess of wires and metallic parts. The two poles on either side reveal themselves as some form of gun, black metal spotted with blue wires, bolted onto the centre sphere on two rotating hinges. You throw the construct high up in the air, and it hovers close to the ceiling. Nearly complete you program its parameters, telling it to kill all moving things, by they demon or otherwise, except you, Evie, Evie’s demon and other constructs like itself.

With that all done, you fuel it up with some magic, and let it activate. The eyeball begins to frantically swivel around, scanning the area, taking note of its surroundings. Looking down it peers into the mass of demons, recognising them as intruders, and locks itself onto them. A glow builds in the guns on either side of it, before blasting out in a flash. A group of small demons explode upwards in a shower of quickly fading body parts, quickly joined by another and another. Flashes streak from the construct floating high in the air, ripping swathes through the demons.

You focus your mind once more, and begin to form another construct, sending it up to join the first high up in the air. Two more follow it, and then a final one. You rearrange them into a cross, satisfying you by its symmetry. A thick layer of smoke lies on the ground from the dissolving remains of demons, red eyes flitting through it, only to be blown apart by a flash from the hovering constructs.

You feel the constructs energy waning, and quickly begin another spell. Reaching out with your mind you feel the mass of magical energy swirling all around you, remnants of the demons you destroyed. You cannot use it yourself, as you cannot absorb it without binding some form of animal demon into yourself, but your constructs can. Normally the magic would just spread out and be absorbed by the many animals and plants around the area, but you think you could put it to a much better use. Focusing some of your remaining magical power, you create a construct to collect the energy filling the room.

Instantly you feel the magic drain away, absorbed by a construct floating above the rest. A bulbous sphere hovers high in the rafters of the room, long wires connecting it to the weapon constructs that continue to rain flashes of destruction down on the demons. The weapons redouble their bombardment as their magical reserves are refilled, and the demons are quickly pushed back out the room, the few stragglers being quickly pulverised by bright flashes.

You reach out with your mind, and grab the nearest pile of chairs and tables. You rip apart the wood and plastic, throwing the cushions away behind you, and begin to place together the hard material to form a large square plate. You grab more and more furniture, and continue to expand the shape until it is just larger than the size of the entrance door to the pool. You stop making the plate bigger, and instead pile the wood and plastic and odd bits of metal on top of each other, making it thicker.

Once you judge the board is thick enough, you punch a series of small holes straight through the plate, places you can bind it all together with. You grab a piece of metal and float it above one of these holes. You compress air around the tip of the metal until the heat of the compression begins to melt the metal. Pouring the molten metal into the hole you fill the small space, and allow a little rounded lip to form at either end, it metal quickly cools, leaving the thick board of various materials bound together tightly. You repeat this for all the tiny holes, leaving you with an extremely sturdy plate.

You repeat this procedure to make two long planks, much longer than the board. Looking over at the wall to either side of the door you focus your mind, and expend nearly the rest of your magical power to reform the stone of the wall just enough to form four large hooks, two on either side of the door.

You tiredly call over to Evie, who looks a bit confused at your actions.

“Get your demon to place this big board over the door would you.”

She nods, and the powerful demon walks over to you, the massive broadsword having disappeared back to wherever it summoned it from. The demon picks up the huge board, grunting only slightly as it takes its enormous weight, and walks over to the door. With a huge shove it slams the plate over the entrance, blocking it entirely, stopping anything from entering or leaving.

With a **** of magic you pick up the two planks and slot them into the hooks, holding the plate firmly in place over the door, and stopping any further intrusions. The demon fades away as Evie dismisses it, and you both look tiredly at each other.

“Well it’s probably not a good idea to sleep here, we should move further into the pool, should be safer.”

Evie nods in agreement, glancing a bit fearfully up at the floating eyeball constructs, seeming happy she wouldn’t have to sleep with them looking down at her all night.

You gather up the scattered cushions between you, and begin to walk toward the viewer’s area of the pool. Entering the room looking down over the pool itself you see that there are some long sofas, and some more cushions. You pile all the cushions in a large mass in one corner, and you drop yourself down into them. Evie settles herself down onto one of the large sofas and promptly goes to sleep.

You decide to follow her lead, and exhaustion washes back through you, pushing you down into a dreamless sleep.

Is there another interruption?
