Prestige Classes
A prestige class is not one that someone can start out as. The ability to enter a prestige class is at the bare minimum barred behind a number of prerequisites based upon ability. Afterall, an arcane caster can hardly begin a career as an Archmage.
However, some prestige classes are endemic to small groups possessing secret knowledge, techniques, and/or resources that are otherwise unavailable anywhere else. These groups often have rites of passage, restricting entry to those who cannot prove themselves worthy.
