Chapter 56

Phone a friend

After the workout and returning to my apartment, I decide to give Lewis a call.

Lewis answers with a belch. “What’s up, Warren?”

“Sounds like you are relaxed already. How was work?”

“It kicked my ass, like usual. We are working mandatory overtime. Every week.”

“That sounds like good money and job security.”

“Or a sweat shop. I don’t have enough spare time to spend the money I’m making. I’m too tired to socialize, and spend half my weekend recuperating. I make all my lunches on Sunday to save time through the week.”

“Wow! Man, as much as that sucks... you sound good. Stick with it, Lewis.” This is the most responsible he has ever sounded.

“Yeah, I plan to,” he said without much enthusiasm.

“Well, are you free this weekend? I could probably swing over and hang.”

“Ahhhh... that weekend...” Lewis thinks about it. “Yeah, I think that one will work, if I wake up.”

“Cool.”

“Hey, how’s your job? Did you quit yet?” Lewis sounds a little more awake than when he first answered.

“No, but I have more to tell when I come over.”

He chuckles. “You sound like you are up to something!”

“Maybe I am,” I say conspiratorially.

“Dude!!! I can’t wait... What about the ladies? Got anything juicy?”

“Well, I have lots of irons in the fire, so to speak, but not a lot of actual forging happening.”

“You got to hammer that shit, bro!”

This is probably not the time to mention the time I am spending with his mom, or how I have invited his sister out to a park in the dead of night... “I’m getting to it.”

“You fucking better! I don’t have any excitement in my life anymore.” A dark part of me hears Lewis and wants to interpret it as a full endorsement for me to exploit his family.

“Yeah! Okay! See you this weekend.”
