Chapter 4 by tobykins tobykins

What will you start by changing?

Personal information.

Before clicking on any tabs, you review the information on Maddie's profile: her name, for one. By tapping on this field, you realize that you can edit it.

Experimentally, you erase Smith, and in its place, you type "Fatpussy."

A popup: Changes saved!

Did it work?

You go to Google and look up "Maddie Fatpussy." The first result is a Twitter page.

Maddie Fatpussy

Biology undergrad at Collegetown University. Lover of plants, dogs, and clouds. She/her.

The second Google result is a page from a college news article:

Maddie Fatpussy is one of this year's recipients for the prestigious Collegetown Academic Fellowship...

It fucking worked.

Beneath her legal name, you now notice a separate field for "Preferred Names." These are apparently the names she will introduce herself by in various social settings. As she goes by the same name in most settings, all of the fields are filled in with "Maddie." You've already changed her legal name, but can you really change what name she prefers?

After a bit of brainstorming, you decide that from now on, Maddie should introduce herself as "Milkmaid Maddie"—that is, except in formal settings, in which case she will prefer to be known as "Madam Milkmaid." Your changes are saved once again, and you look back at the computer. The webpages have changed accordingly:

Madam Milkmaid Fatpussy is one of this year's recipients for the prestigious Collegetown Academic Fellowship...

You wonder why such a boring and serious article should acknowledge such a ridiculous preferred name, but maybe this is just how the app works: when a person's name is listed as "Preferred," society as a whole will respect that name.

Either way, you're off to a good start with Maddie the Milkmaid, but what's next?

What's next?

More fun
