What's next?

One last job

“All right, our job today is to file these malfunctioning enchanted items. Sounds easy enough.” Kim said, clad in a nice, clean bathrobe.

All manner of miscellaneous items floated around the storage room. Kim lunged to grab a flying carpet rushing by, but the magical furniture rolled over and twisted itself around the woman’s ankles, lifting her upside down in midair. “What? That’s unfair! Let me down!”

Kim’s robe slipped away thanks to gravity, but she wasn’t left uncovered for long. A clingy towel leaped to the woman’s body and wrapped itself around it her chest, leaving her crotch still uncovered. “Eck! Not the perverted towel again! A bit of help, Harie?”

Harako stepped out from the shadows sporting a brand new sundress. “…Why. …we already settled our debt to Morpheus …Why do you insist on taking these horrible jobs?”

Kim’s faint smile turned upside down, or rather downside up? “Oh…So you know... Promise you won’t get mad?” Harako didn’t say anything. Kim sighed, it was time to come clean.

“It’s just, the pay is so good! I earn more working here in just a month than I ever did in all my previous jobs! Combined! I bought a new car, new clothes, hell, a Jacuzzi and even a new apartment!”

“…Then keep working yourself! …Why did you drag me along? I didn’t have to suffer for your greed!”

“… Because I knew you would back out, and …you know how hard our jobs can be! I didn’t want to go through this alone! I wanted to do it with my friend… Come on Harie, what do you say? Just a couple more weeks until I’m able to afford a second apartment and retire into the comfy life of a landlord! I’ll even invite you over to my Jacuzzi! What do you say?”

Harako’s hair swung wildly around Kim. Uh-oh, she was mad. The human flinched, but the strike never came. “No … I already asked Lord Morpheus for my old job. …This is your problem now.”

“Wait, Harako! At least help me get down before you go!” Kim writhed in midair and tried to kick her legs as the ghost vanished.

“Great, how am I going to get finish the job now? I don’t suppose you guys want to go back to the shelves on your own?” The towel squeezed harder, the rug dragged her higher in the air, a couple of magical feathers floated ominously towards her, along with a magical polaroid camera, and a paddle that beelined towards for her posterior. “Wait, I was kidding! Stay back! Aaaaah!”

The sun was setting down over the mountain. Kim exited the room and leaned against its closed door. Her skin glistened with sweat, her bathrobe lost in the struggle. Finally, after a torturous day of work, she managed to complete her task. “Argh, It’s so much harder alone! I wish Harako was still here...”

Tomorrow, another lonely task awaited her. Losing her ghost pal stung more than the floating paddle did, if by a slim margin. She hoped the ghost would forgive her eventually, but there was something more important in Kim’s mind than her friendship, and that was her financial security!

The jobs were hard, she wasn’t sure if she could last a couple more weeks on her own. Kim decided that she was going to quit! But she didn’t give up on the dream of buying another apartment, no. She just had to get herself a nice going away gift.
