Chapter 3 by MonsterBox MonsterBox

Have you been spotted?

Oh, absolutely.

You don’t mind someone getting a peek, quite the opposite, but it’s hard to tell the kind of person who’s going to appreciate it from the kind of person who’ll call the cops. You glide swiftly into the alley between two houses on your right and peek out, hoping no one noticed or at least that they just moved on. Unfortunately, you can see the glowing eye of a cell phone flashlight illuminating a bit at a time as two people stand just outside the car, now pulled to the side of the road.

While they’re not cops, the two people are either high school seniors or college underclassmen, and not particularly your type. You can’t make out details, but the fedora and leather jacket on one of them says a lot without even trying to, while the other is tall, gawky, and wearing some kind of a beanie. Still, it’s less the undesirable fashion choices, and more what you hear them saying.

“Dude, is it on record?” the shorter one in the hat says, looking around wildly. His friend with the phone nods, scanning more methodically back and forth.

“Yeah, man. I’m telling you, I saw some chick out here.” Given the slur in his voice, you really hope he wasn’t the one driving. “Come on, she’s probably still around. Just help me look and stop worrying so fucking much.”

“Okay, but if we get her, I get the upload. I have a reputation to defend.” The sincerity in his words doesn’t make them the slightest bit more palatable. You don’t mind showing off, but being recorded carries a lot more risks than just being naked in the first place. You have a job, after all, and even if they can’t prove indecent exposure, you wouldn’t be surprised to be fired if they took the video in your house, through your window, while you were asleep. ‘Fuck that place,’ you jab silently, irritation at your job briefly burying the far more common-sense instinct of avoiding them.

By the time you can hear them making some decidedly gross jokes about what they’ll do when they catch you, which you do NOT want to find out if they’re true or not, the light from their phone is cutting off escape back towards your house. You look to the other end of the alley. It’s quiet. No sounds or movement. But it’s up against another street, which means it’s a lot better-lit. Maybe not quite daytime or anything, but you’ll be so much easier to spot if you go that way. Of course, if you don’t, you’re about to be a star. There’s no way they’ll miss you, there’s nothing to hide behind here. Moment of truth.

Stay put and figure out another answer? Or run for the street and hope your instincts no one's out there are right?
