Chapter 13

Yes or no?
Of course!
'Yes!' the mages replied in unison. It was really a no-brainer.
Lady Fate smiled. 'Excellent! And just to show you i want you to win, i'll help you. Sagus Bolinheim. When you return, seek a sword known as Mucro lux Angelus, the Devil-Carver. This sword, and this sword alone can, with the aid of certain other elements, cut through Arakarin's feared shadow-skin.'
'It will kill him?!' Sagus asked, almost giddily.
'Not immediately. Mucro lux Angelus carries with it the soul of it's long-dead wielder. Because of this, and it's exquisite quality, it will cut Arakarin as a normal sword would cut a human. It won't dissolve his body, but it will even the match.'
Sagus clenched his fist and smirked. 'Not a problem! I bet Arakarin's become so dependent on that shadow-skin, he hasn't practiced his technique in decades! Lady Fate, he's as good as your's!'
'Not so fast. You may or may not be able to destroy his body. You're wrong about his skills, as i've seen him defeat skilled swordsmen untouched. Don't forget, he FOUGHT his way out of hell. He overcame millions of demons by sword-skill alone. And even if you do destroy the body, his soul will remain and continually reincarnate itself into new bodies until no one is left who can damage him. That, Marianne Valengard, is where you come in. You know soul-shackling spells, soul-dispersion spells and even soul burning spells. But for a demon of your enemy's strength, these will not be nearly enough. There is however a spell that can send a soul to me, regardless of it's power and will to remain. You must learn this spell. Without it, you are doomed to fail, to die and to remove the only things between Arakarin and the end of Tyren as you know it. This spell is known as the Spirit Fall. It is a spell created by Utoness to rid her realm of souls such as Arakarin's. She always suspected a soul of unimaginable evil would one day come into existence. Paranoid for a god, but true nonetheless.'
'If only Utoness knows it, how can i learn it?'
'I didn't say only she knows it, i said she created it. She shares it with necromancers who come to her and ask for it.'
Marianne's mind realized in an instant that Sheunsi, the man who'd taught her, had sometimes mentioned a spell called Spirit Fall and that if he were fortunate enough to find Utoness in his afterlife, he would ask her what it was and how to do it. His thirst for knowledge may be the salvation of the world. She could only pray that he really was the good man she'd always known him to be.
'So, Marianne is the key. Once i cut him in half, she has to cast this wonderful spell, and Arakarin will be gone forever. Sounds simple enough.'
'Doesn't it? Should be easy to do in a month, hm?'
'Yeah! Ok i'm ready to go back!'
'Wait!' Marianne interrupted. 'You said Mucro lux Angelus could kill him with certain other elements. What are they?'
Lady Fate looked at Sagus like he was the biggest fool she knew. 'I'm glad SOMEone was paying attention! Yes, Mucro lux Angelus alone cannot do it. It needs to be treated with water, chlorophyll, carbon and silicon, in that order. Any other order will disrupt the reaction with the sword's spirit and render it useless. Use them in the reverse order, silicon, carbon, chlorophyll and water, and the sword will turn on you and **** the wielder to kill his own comrades. Use them as carbon, water, silicon and chlorophyll and the sword will become a useless lump of rusted brass. Will you remember that?'
Sagus closed his eyes and repeated. 'water, chlorophyll, carbon, silicon' to himself.
'Yes, we will. Thank you, Lady Fate. We are indebted to you.'
'Only if you succeed. If not, then you owe me nothing but your lives. Now go. Oh, and one more thing. Rebecca Oswin's arrow will not kill Arakarin. You already know that. But that doesn't mean it won't affect him. Remember that. It may make the difference.' Lady Fate tore open a spot in the void revealing the place where Sagus had fallen and Marianne sat in a trance. 'Go. You have one month to find the sword, learn the spell and defeat Arakarin before Stradi does.'
The mages flew through the tear and entered their bodies. Marianne's eyes opened first as she gasped at her return to flesh. Rebecca, who hadn't been busy until moments ago restoring Sagus' body, was behind her at the moment.
''Woah! You're back. So, did you bring him back?"
Marianne panted for air. The journey through planes of existence took a lot of energy for even the best necromancer. She was almost passing out. ''Yes...i....i did...''
Sagus' eyes opened slowly. It felt strange opening his eyes, but not his eyes. He instantly knew this was not his original body. It felt something like moving into a new house that doesn't immediately feel like 'home'. He smiled, saying only ''we did it...'' before falling asleep, his soul weary from the journey back to life.
Sophie scowled at him, but it was more of a half-smile/scowl. "Alive for one second and already fast asleep. Sagus, you're such a lazy bum."
What will they pursue first?
