Chapter 8 by hambo hambo

How does Hilda respond?

Of course!

"Of course! You poor wretch, losing a husband at your age is so tragic," Hilda says as she pulls out her heavy sack of gold and gives the beggar a coin.

The woman's eyes bulge at the sight of so much wealth. "Oh bless you kind knight! Mighty knight!"

Hilda starts to put the coin sack back on her belt, when the beggar interrupts her.

"Seeing that you are so... er... well off, might I trouble you for a few more coins? The children would be ever so grateful."

How can I say no to that?

"Of course! How much do they need?"

"Um... well, 5 coins?" Asks the beggar, not wanting to press her luck.

Hilda agrees unquestioningly.

"Wow this bitch is gullible," thinks the beggar.

Hilda once again starts to close up her coin sack, but again the beggar makes another request. Then another. And another. And another. Each one requiring more coins and sounding more absurd than the last, but each time Hilda agrees to it.

By the time she's done, the beggar has swindled every coin Hilda had on her, and is walking away as a very rich woman.

Hilda, meanwhile, is just glad she was able to help the orphanage pay its rent AND save the rec center from being bulldozed by the evil rich developer who wants to turn it into a toxic waste dump for his equally evil business partners, thus giving Pilla's troubled teenagers a place to hang out while learning important life skills.

She was also thrilled to donate her keep to the beggar so she'd have a nice place to stay while also allowing her to finally accomplish her life-long dream of opening her own school "For Children Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too."
