During lunch they were hand fed jerky, and given sips of water from their canteens, while they rested. When lunch was over, they packed up and continued their journey south. When they made camp that night, pitons with loops at the end were driven like stakes into the ground. Rope was tied between each prisoners left leg and then attached to the loops. Despite this measure, two guards kept watch that night, while the others slept.
