Nowhere To Go

About the time they start talking about MRI's you start to wonder about the hospital bills you're racking up. You ask, and apparently on this Earth the USA passed some sort of Universal Healthcare package back in 1943. It started as for Soldiers only but by the end of the 60's it had expanded to include everyone. Well, at least there's that.

A head-only MRI isn't quite as claustrophobic but it still involves sticking your head into a hole in a machine, the machine the size of a small car while the hole is only barely big enough for a human head. In your case you'd have enough room to scratch your nose with a finger but little else. Nothing to do but just wait.

"Well, I have good news and I have bad news Mr. Doe." a short Doctor speaks over an intercomm while looking over the tech's shoulder. Well, this is when they find out you're a fraud. You just couldn't think of a way out of this without it looking suspicious. They even did a metal detector sweep over you just in case there was metal in you that you didn't "remember".

"Can I get the good news first?"

"Your brain appears to be perfectly healthy. If I had to guess, I'd say there's no physical reason you can't get all of your memories back."

Really? They were still buying it? The idea that you're getting some extra slack because you're a dude crosses your mind. There weren't that many of your after all.

"The bad news is that this means that if your memory loss is psychological then there's no quick fix, and no gaurentee you'll like what you find when you do find them again."

"Heavy."

"Pardon?"

"Nothing. So if there's nothing physically wrong with me, what do I do? Where can I go?"

"We can put you in contact with a lawyer who specializes in this sort of thing. And she often works pro bono too."

A lawyer would be helpful, but she's the most likely to get you in trouble for the lack of paperwork. Should you?
