Chapter 6
by Kalion
How does the first day of the cease fire go?
Not bad, except for an attempt
On the first day of the ceasefire you decide to start you evacuation efforts. It starts off well as you Alexia and Galeon with an escort of 20 of your elite guards ensure that the United Armies are allowing the people of Athenapolis to evacuate. For the most part there is little trouble although it breaks your heart to see families torn apart by the decision to send their elders and youngest children to safety.
After several hours and close to four hundred of these unfortunate souls are released, you move into the city with local criers to spread the word. You are walking slowly leading the 50 elderly, 5 wounded and 13 non-citizens that you found scattered in one of the poor districts of the city to the gates when you sense that you are being watched.
When you order Galeon to take 16 of your guards and continue to the gates, you can see how much he dislikes the idea of leaving you unprotected in the middle of a war zone. But, after a long wordless stare, he salutes briskly and starts herding the flock of elderly and wounded away.
You then give Alexia the four remaining guards to go down the alley to the left and find a way to the roof of the inn one hundred paces ahead telling her to capture the archer you spotted waiting for you to get closer.
"I'm going to spring the trap," You explain the plan, "I need you to make sure the archer doesn't get away." It's not as much of a risk as it sounds. You can rely on your armor to stop the arrow. As expected, Alexia chastises you quietly for being unnecessarily reckless, but you assure her you will be fine. Finally, she relents offering a prayer as she slips away. "May the gods favor you, reckless fool." To which you reply:
"I've already succeeded because only a fool would try to trap a god." She steps back with a frown, and you see her shaking her head before vanishing in the alleyway.
You give Galeon and Alexia a minute to do their jobs before walking calmly towards the inn pretending not to see the ten men armed with spears hiding to on both sides of the paved street. These men do not look like regular soldiers, more likely citizens of the city or mercenaries armed with looted weapons. Now that you know they are there, you continue walking prepared to draw your twin swords at the first sign of trouble. At about fifty paces the archer fires. The arrow sticks into your armor just below your ribs, it is a good shot, but like hundreds before, it fails to pierce the armor. Before the archer can fire another shot there is a commotion from the roof, and Alexia appears signaling no other threats on surrounding roofs. Just as you're about to signal your thanks, the foolish looters attack from your flanks. Before they can strike, you rip the arrow out of your armor, draw your swords and move with great agility cutting down all ten would-be assassins before they could even scream in pain.
Alexia and the four guards assigned to her arrive before you've finished cleaning your swords with a bound prisoner in tow. Before you attract any more unwanted attention, you and Alexia lead the four guards dragging your prisoner back to camp to meet up with Galeon to find that he too succeeded with his assigned task.
Was the archer just an ambitious looter or something more sinister?
