"Actually, I can't," Vicky said coldly. "You may not like him, but he's family and he's not long for this world, so the least we can do is be there for him when he wants us. You think it's bad being stuck out here for a week? He's been stuck out here for almost his entire life, and he'll die out here, so it's the least we can do to see he isn't alone."

A long, uncomfortable silence followed the remonstration, after which Liz looked guiltily back at her phone, mumbling. "Whatever."

"Good guy, is he?" Brandon asked with **** casualness.

"I've only met him once or twice," Vicky said. "Ages ago. But it can't be nice to be out in the middle of nowhere for so long."

Brandon grunted agreement and the rest of the drive continued in silence.
