Xalandra picks up the remains of the glasses and tries to cast another spell, one that's supposed to restore damaged items.

Unfortunately, the elf had already placed an enchantment on the glasses (it had been intended to cloud Belinda's mind and make her more susceptible to Xalandra's suggestions, but she had borked the spell and it instead simply clouded Belinda's vision whenever she wore them), and as any first-year wizard will tell you (unless they skipped class that day, like a certain elf had) mixing magics can have unfortunate consequences.

As Xalandra finished the spell, she noticed... nothing. It was as if she hadn't cast a spell at all! She tried casting it a couple more times just to be sure, but each time the result was the same. Frustrated at her apparent lack of success, Xalandra went to Plan B.
