Nikolaj's Journal: Part Two; Entry four, five, and six

{if S = 1}Nora sat down, sorted the pages out into order, added them to the journal, and began to read;

'Saturday 14th 1978

Today we set forth from the chamber down one of the tunnels. Almost immediately as I set down the forboding tunnel I was set upon by a sense of dread; a kind of feeling that I only experienced once before long ago that I will not recount here. At the very least I will say that the faint smell of blood that I smell wafting from deep within is something that I hope I will not have to bear for much longer. Angelica, knowing quite a lot about geology, told me not to worry as it's probably some kind of iron based mineral. I hope she's right. But blood, blood is something you will never forget the stench of.'

There was a large gap between the last paragraph and the next one, with lots of crossed out words that Nora could not determine. However, the next entry is undated, and presumably from the same day.

'May God watch over us all! Professor Simon Ortega is dead. How it happened we have no way of knowing, but we do know that whatever happened could not have been made by man or beast or anything that is good and holy. Only a monster could have done this, some kind of terrible creature of hell or the devil himself. It all happened when we reached a section of the tunnels which were unmistakably man-made. Of course we were overjoyed that we had discovered more of this fantastic and fascinating complex, but in the process of studying the hieroglyphs that lined the walls, Simon Ortega lagged behind. When we had noticed he was gone we began to search for him.

That is when we noticed the blood.

There was blood everywhere. More than there could have been possibly inside a single human being. Further ahead we found some of his body; a boot at first, then his foot and hands, various bones, and finally what remained of his head. His solitary hanging eyeball showed more genuine terror than any actor ever could. I was not the first to flee, but I certainly am not going to deny that I followed them. What remained of us fled back to where we thought it safe.'

Nora shut the journal for now.{elseif S = 2}Nora opened the journal up once more:

'Monday 16th 1978

I couldn't bear to write yesterday, if a day had even passed. I wouldn't know. What happened to Professor Simon Ortega proved to us our primal monkey like fears; that we were not alone. What exactly that is is unknown. But what we do know is that something large enough to kill a grown man, a grown man from Siberia no less, means that it must hunt something else. No small, bug eating bat or lichen eating newt could have done this. How large is the ecosystem down here? And how long had it been seperated from the surface world? It can't have been too long ago, after all, the ruins down here, while ancient, are clearly man-made. Once we make it out of here, the world will have much to talk about.

If we make it out of here that is.

The team and I decided to head back to the "hub" for the time being, to better assess our situation. Perhaps the other tunnels are safer?'
