More Snooping

Emma meandered about the house, aimlessly wandering until she came up with a plan on how to waste the afternoon. Almost in a fugue state, Emma found herself standing in the upstairs hallway. She couldn't recall if she had been wandering for minutes or seconds.

Killed a few too many brain cells last night, Emma, she thought to herself. Thank God she didn't have to go to class. That made her feel pity for poor Jenny.

Now at the top of the stairs, Emma stood in the hallway, wondering what she was coming up here for. Blinking away her confusion, and willing the coffee she had consumed to hurry up and help her focus, Emma started towards Jake's room. She had intended to go check her phone and play on it for a few minutes, but something stopped her. She looked down the long hallway. Aunt Maude's door was wide open, the room still dark and foreboding. Even in the daytime it looked spooky.

Emma was starting to recall why she had ventured this way. With Maude and her cousins busy with lessons, and Uncle Ed doing whatever it was he did all day, she had the second floor all to herself.

Yesterday's adventure of checking out the house hadn't turned up anything interesting, but she had checked dull places. The garage, and attic, that's not exciting. Those are places you store old junk that you want out of the way.

"Bedrooms," Emma said to the empty hallway. That's where people lived. That's where interesting stuff would be. Not tucked away in a cellar, but close by, where you could easily get to whatever it was Emma thought she would find.

Emma listened intently, trying to make sure no one was headed her way for whatever reason. She didn't hear anything. She reasoned that even if someone did decide to come upstairs, Emma would hear those creaky old stairs with plenty of time to exit wherever she was snooping.

With her mind made up, Emma's face became a mischievous grin. Now it was only a matter of where to start. The bathroom was out. She could check in there anytime, plus it probably wouldn't have anything good in it anyway. Unless Emma wanted to steal some of Jenny's shampoos or perfume, which she didn't entirely rule out.

So that just left the three bedrooms.
