Who is emerging into the night?
Monarch City: History and Layout
History:
Monarch City is an American city created in the late 1890s. The company that originally built up the city, Monarch, was heavily involved in weapon manufacturing. As the company became more powerful, so did the city, rising from a factory town to one of the countries greatest cities. It rivals Los Angelas, New York City, and Jump City in terms of the amount of commerce it brings in.
However, there is a huge underworld hiding under the surface of this great city. Crime runs rampant, fed by a corrupt mayor, corporate greed, and a profitable **** trade. Crime lords and gang leaders rule huge swaths of the city.
Heroes rose to meet the growing wave of villainy. First, there was the original trio.
The Marvelous, a man with superhuman strength, intelligence, and flight. However, he went international and was killed in 1977 in a fight to the **** with Gargantua.
Aria, a warrior woman with fire powers who also went international. She died of a **** overdoes in the nineties. People still debate whether it was an accident or not.
The Magician is the only one still alive, wielding his magical powers. He went international for a while in the 70s and 80s but went back to his roots in the 90s. He's retired now, a recluse who seldom interacts with the other heroes.
The introduction of superheroes also led to the rise of supervillains. There have been many over the years. The Buccaneer, Salazaar the Slicer, Toxic, The Ooze, Big Wheel, Slade, and many others all tried to cause Havoc over the years. So far, the heroes have been able to contain them.
However, the game has changed in recent years. Things are more violent, more brutal, more vicious. Villians used to have a code of honor. Not anymore.
Monarch City:
Downtown: The center of the city, where the rich play and decide the lives of so many.
Monarch Square: A huge portion of the city is still controlled by the Monarch Corporation, and their offices and factories make up a huge chunk of the city north of Downtown.
Government Center: Next to Monarch Square, most of the Government buildings are housed here. This is where Mayor Ryan Strong runs the city.
The Villiage: High-end real estate around Downtown. Many universities make their home here.
Most of the city outside these areas is referred to as "Outside the Castle Walls" due to the high crime and poverty.
The Chopping Block: Blocks of poor workers housing north of Monarch Square. Called so due to the rapidly decreasing employment in the factories which provide work.
The Cinders: Huge swath of poor housing south of The Villiage. Was part of the village before it was burned down during a conflict between Aria and The Crimson Dragon in '88. Now, it is the center of the **** Trade. A powerful gang named The Burned hold power here, as well as a few notable supervillains.
The Docks: Poor immigrant housing by the waterfront. There are tens of rival gangs who try and wrest control from one another in this area, as well as various mafia groups.
Poland: The hotbed of crime in Monarch City, it sits between the Docks and the Cinders. Named Poland due to it being a battleground between The Cinders and The Docks. In this unrest is where most of the supervillains thrive.
