Chapter 3
by pseudoless
Who's the first Target ?
Maria, the co-worker
I’d like to say I though very long about who to choose as my target, but that would be a lie, I just looked at the names and thought of the people close to me. Maybe I shouldn’t choose Matt, he is my roommate, but he spends most of his time in his bedroom nowadays so I don’t see him that much.
My parents both live more than an hour from the city, and I don’t think they would even understand what a quest is. So it doesn’t leave many choices, I guess I could choose Alex but I only see him during the weekends.
Following my elimination process, it would make sense to pick Maria, I see her everyday at work. So that’s the name I tap on the list.
Select Maria Finocci as Target 1 ? Yes / No
I press yes, and the Targets tab changes, showing Maria’s profile.
Name: Maria
Surname : Finocci
Gender: Female
Age : 27
Level 1 (0 / 10 xp)
Class: None
Perks : None
Add Quest
Add Class (Class Designer perk required)
Before I can react, a popup opens up in the middle of the screen.
Slow Beginnings : Added a target for the first time. [+5 xp]
First Achievement : Unlocked Achievements Tab
I close the popup and look back at Maria’s profile, I don’t know her age but that looks about right, I’m starting to think this app is just siphoning personal data out of people.
Whatever, I already decided I was going to test it, so here I go, I press add quest, and a input box appears, where I could supposedly write a quest for Maria.
I think about it for a while, I need to choose something small enough that she would want to do it if she did receive it. It would be better if that’s something I could check somehow. Maybe make her wear a scarf tomorrow, the climate is getting warmer and she stopped bringing one a while ago.
I start writing it down but I erase it. No, if I want to give her a quest, I’d want to be helpful. It won’t do anything, and if it does, it will be for the best anyway.
Maria will receive the following quest : “Eat a full meal”
Reward can’t be designed without the Reward Designer I perk
Reward can’t be chosen without the Recommended Reward II perk
Selecting appropriate reward for quest…
Reward: “Full recovery after rest”
Quest Giver : Gave a quest to a target for the first time. [+5 xp]
Level Up! [+1 Perk point]
One step at a time : Leveled up for the first time. [+5 xp]
I turn off my phone after closing all the popups, and go clean up my plate. Enough weird phone game for today.
I spend an hour chatting with a friend on discord before going to sleep. But I have some trouble with actually falling asleep, maybe I’m anxious, or maybe it’s Matt talking too loud but I move around in my bed for a while.
I’m late! I’m so fucking late! And that’s completely my fault! I always turn my phone alarm on before going to sleep and I just forgot yesterday. So now I’m running trying to arrive before the boss does. Why the hell am I always messing things up!
I open the library’s door wide as I look around, and Maria looks at me in surprise, before making a small wave at me.
“I’m sorry! I forgot to turn on my alarm yesterday!” I explain as I wipe the sweat off my face.
She lets out a soft giggle while putting a book away.
“It’s okay John, the boss isn’t here today, and I’m in a good mood, I won’t tell on you.”
I sigh in relief, and grab the return bin, showing my goodwill by starting work right away.
“Something good happened?
- Nothing special, I just slept well last night.
- Oh great…”
I don’t really know how to continue the conversation as I leave the counter to put the borrowed books back in their place. I work a few hours, and I grab a sandwich for my lunch break. I check my phone, and I have a few notifications from the QuestMaster app.
Maria Finocci completed her quest successfully. [+3 xp]
Beginner QuestMaster : A target completed a quest for the first time. [+5 xp]
Level Up! [+1 Perk point]
I leveled up again, and the quest was marked as completed. If this app actually worked, that means Maria followed her quest and got a good sleep in exchange. Which doesn’t seem like much, but my mind can’t help but wonder how far I could go with those quests. What if I give a quest for something she doesn’t want to do?
My heart starts to race from excitement, this might be a magical app and if it is, I won’t hesitate to use it. I want to try and write another quest, but I also haven’t spent my points in the perk tree yet, so I check my options.
There’s way more options than I could read before my break ends, but most of them are locked by previous upgrades anyways, so I pre-select the ones that grab my interest.
I got three perks that could be useful right now:
Recommended Reward II (1 perk) : Create a list of three recommended reward for basic quests and let the QuestMaster choose one.
Public Unawareness (1 perk) : When toggled, nobody will notice the target doing anything inappropriate for a quest.
Class Designer (2 perks) : Give a class to a target, slowly altering them as they level up.
Recommended Reward II would let me choose the reward for quests between 3 instead of letting the app choose. Public Unawareness seems good to cover my bases, and I could also spend all my points to unlock Class Designer, I’m curious to see what that would actually entail.
My curiosity wins and I spend both of my perk points on Class Designer.
Growing Potential : Unlocked a perk for the first time. [+5 xp]
Be careful, once a class is assigned it can’t be removed from a target.
That’s an ominous warning, maybe I should think about it some more before choosing a class for Maria, I click on Add Class and a window opens, with a long list of classes, and the same warning that displayed when I unlocked the perk.
I scroll through for a while, looking at the list that expand way too far, did they not think about choice paralysis when designing this thing?
Cheerleader, Right-Hand Man, Trophy Wife, Maid, Mad Scientist, Girl Next Door, Gym Bro, Nerd, Bully, Politician, Princess, Android, Actor, Heiress…
Not only do I feel like the list could still expand infinitely, but I also don’t see any particular theme, things are in random order, some of them are tags on porn sites, while others are litterary tropes, and there are also pretty normal jobs mixed in-between.
What would happen if I chose the Android class? Would Maria slowly become a robot?
I am interested in this app but that goes a little too far, I don’t think I can just remove someone’s humanity like that, this is scarier than I first thought.
“John! Stop being lazy and come help me! Client need you to make a library card!” I hear Maria yell, I jump in surprise and hear a little sound coming from my phone.
A class has successfully been assigned to Maria Finocci, recommended rewards might be thematically adjusted depending on quest difficulty.
I check her profile in horror, what the hell did I just press?
Author's Note: You can comment classes you would like to see, no limit. I gave a few examples and might choose one from there if nothing else inspires me.
This can also be a good branching point if someone has a particular idea they would like to write.
What class has been assigned to Maria?
