Chapter 17

Make her order at the bar
"Sorry, if you want to order something you'll have to come to the bar" Kayla called back to her. It wasn't a pub rule but Kayla felt pleased with herself for exerting her authority.
Slowly Jason's date got up and walked to the bar, each step nuanced to the extent that Kayla wondered if she had been professionally coached to walk like that. "Please accept my apologies, I didn't realise places like this existed outside of the movies. Could I possibly see the cocktail menu?"
It wasn't clear to Kayla if she was deliberately trying to wind her up in retaliation for being made to come up to the bar, but she put on her best customer service smile and directed her to the rarely needed cocktails board.
"Well I guess I'll have a Manhattan. Even a place like this can't make a mess of a Manhattan"
Kayla bit her tongue to not retort and got to work mixing the drink. She had a feeling that whatever she produced wasn't going to meet the standards her customer normally expected, and whilst there was no comment when presented with her finished drink her eyes spoke of disappointment before taking it and returning to Jason.
"He's got no chance with a girl like that" Stuart mouthed to Kayla as soon as she was out of earshot.
"And why do you say that?" countered Kayla.
"Just look at him - your common, uncultured, unthinking thug. No sane woman would find him attractive, let alone one as classy and beautiful as her"
Kayla wasn't sure what annoyed her more, the fact that her boyfriend thought the stuck up bitch was beautiful and classy or that there was something wrong with a woman that found Jason attractive. How much of the past twenty hours had she spent dreaming about his physique?
Stuart downed the dregs of his beer. "I'd better get home - busy today tomorrow" he informed Kayla before leaning over the bar and softly kissing her goodbye before turning and leaving the pub.
With Stuart gone and the pub having a quiet night Kayla's attention was drawn to Jason and his date. The locals had overcome their initial curiosity over their unexpected visitor and resumed their background chatter meaning she couldn't listen into their conversation from the safety of the bar. But their body language still intrigued her - Jason appeared distant to the point of disinterested, whilst she seemed to be mirroring him until he looked away at which point she would devour him with her eyes. What little conversation there was leading to even fewer laughs.
The night was wearing on and customers were slowly departing. Kayla saw the table next to Jason's call it a night, presenting her with an opportunity - technically that table didn't fall under Kayla's zone for cleaning, but with little else to keep her busy she saw it as a chance to get close and listen in on the conversation.
