Chapter 2 by Dark Z Dark Z

Who will you Follow?

Major Sarah Johnson X-Com sniper

Sarah Johnson had been X-Com for only a few months but had already been promoted to Major. As things stood she was one of the best snipers that the resistance group had ever seen.

Sarah's nickname was the "Mongoose" owing to the fact that she had an unbroken line of one shot kills on alien vipers. This wasn't part of any special animosity or anything. Sarah was simply an amazing sniper who seemed to always hit her target, and when vipers were on the field, their lethality and lack of significant armor made them a priority target.

The team was coming off a retaliation rescue mission, they had been amazingly lucky as they had deployed with three snipers a ranger, a specialist and a heavy weapons tech. The specialist had an opportunity to get in sight of a team of mutons and a berserker but the three snipers were able to bring them down from afar while the heavy weapons soldier softened them up, and the ranger charged in for a bladed weapon kill. A second team then arrived, this time vipers.

Sarah's team engaged them at range successfully killing two of the vipers, but a third fired off a poison attack, diverting her close in forces. The viper was able to use it's tongue to grab Sarah's number 2 sniper Ana Rodriguez. They were able to kill the viper and rescue Ana, but between injuries and PTSD it would be a while before she could deploy again.

The rest of the mission was a hunt for covert shapeshifters. Sarah's ranger Mike Sandwich had taken some hits, but he too would be alright eventually. Sarah's team was welcomed back with a perfect rescue award. Sarah didn't think that the rescue was perfect given the injuries to her team, but all the civilians survived and her team was alive, so it was a better day than the alternative.

Sarah had returned to her quarters. As a high ranking officer, she rated a little privacy. Sarah looked in the mirror as she stripped off her armor. The 27 year old woman had been born in America but was mostly of polish descent having what could be described as a permanently slight tan. Her long brown hair was currently in a bun under her hat, but now she would literally let her hair down, so that the naturally highlighted brown hair with bits of blonde and red fell down to her back. Sarah was not vain, but she did maintain her hair.

Sarah was a solid 5'9" and while not a gym rat, kept in good enough shape that her stomach was decently toned below her b-cup breasts. As she pulled off her boots, she looked at the photo next to her bunk displaying her daughter Daisy Johnson who was growing up so fast. It was a pity that Daisy would never know her father. Jack, or J.J. as he preferred to be called, had been a heavy weapons specialist. Sarah had met him while she was a civilian. They had gotten married and she had gotten pregnant, but before long, Jack Johnson had been KIA on a mission.

Before Jack had gone back, he had gotten his wife to join him in target practice, and her marksmanship had amazed him. The moment ha had gotten back to duty he had recommended that she be brought in immediately. But upon J.J.'s **** she had wanted to stay with her baby. It had taken nearly a year, but after some visits from the Commander himself, she had been convinced to join up for her daughter's future.

Based on her skill and leadership, the commander thought the investment of time had been proven to be a good investment. As for Sarah's daughter, she was staying with Sarah's mother in a discrete rural location. Sarah made it a point to visit anytime she had leave. The girl was her bundle of joy and reason for fighting. Sarah kissed her fingers and touched them to her daughter's picture before turning out the light and getting some sleep.

A few hours later Sarah was awoken to the sound of someone banging on her door "major! gear up, emergency deployment in 10 minutes, meet in the hanger, briefing in the air!"

Sarah quickly put her gear back on and scrambled for the armory. The Quartermaster gave her her standard loadout and she boarded the drop ship.

The in flight briefing announced that this was a VIP capture mission and that a VIP with extensive knowledge regarding the vipers was being moved, and would only be exposed for another hour.

Sarah's team on this mission consisted of herself, the specialist that she had worked with recently, and four new recruits.

The team got dropped off three blocks from the intercept point. Due to the inexperience of her team, Sarah and the medic/specialist took point. They avoided all patrols until they reached the target area. Sarah took up a position on a roof and once the team was ready, they charged in guns a blazing.

An Advent combat team consisting of a captain, two swordsmen, and one shield expert were basically mowed down. The specialist knocked out the vip, and slung him over his shoulder. As the team made a run for the extract point, Advent reinforcements began arriving.

The Medic/specialist was able to dodge fire and stay safe while still moving. Sarah was bringing up the rear, but that meant that the moment some new obstacle appeared in front of her team, she was able to dispatch it from range, and not take any hits herself.

During this gauntlet, two of the recruits went down with serious wounds, and Sarah ordered the other two recruits to grab them and fireman carry them out of there.

As they were approaching the evac zone she ordered "go, go, go," over the radio. The medic carrying the vip target grabbed a line and slipped his boot into the bottom loop and a second later disappeared into the hovering evac craft.

From the north appeared another squad of advent. The two rookies carrying comrades dropped their guys for a second to throw grenades, taking out half the squad. Sarah waived them to the craft. One pair of rookie and wounded rookie grabbed a line, were yanked up and disappeared into the ship.

The ship's commander radioed down that there was no time and they needed to get aboard. Advent fighter craft were inbound.

Sarah targeted the advent soldier trying to flank the remaining rookies and took him out with a head shot. The second pair of rookie and wounded rookie disappeared into the ship.

Sarah swiveled to the Advent captain, click out of ammo. She drew her mag pistol like a lightning strike and cracked off several rounds. And despite the captain's armor, he wen't down.

Sarah took no time to cheer and instead made a run for the recovery lines on the drop ship. She grabbed the line, and closed her eyes finally feeling relief at surviving another mission. She felt the usual sudden jerk and acceleration.

Then she realized that something was wrong. She was in the air, yanked away from the escape line. A viper's tongue wrapped around her waist. She could see her medic poke his head out the door ad he reached for the drop line hooks above the door, Sarah could hear the approach of the fast moving fighters in the distance, and did the only thing she could. "Go, complete the mission!" She yelled before she hit something leathery and was wrapped up in the coils of a viper.

The drop ship evaced and despite the quick arrival of Advent fighter-craft the drop ship was able to use its systems to evade destruction. Her team was safe, her mission complete, hopefully her actions contributed towards her daughter having a good future.

Sarah turned her head to her captor and stared defiantly into its eyes as she waited for the end. The viper squeezed her until the world went black, and she knew no more.

Does she wakeup? If so, where?
