Chapter 15
by Aradnor
Does Mélanie manage to wriggle free, or do you keep a firm grip on your prize?
Mélanie struggles desperately, and manages to break you hold!
Stumbling backwards, the archer continues to pointlessly wave her side-arm back and forth before her, as if the mere threat of her dagger might ward you off. As the steel slashes through your ethereal flesh, the many layers of your translucent skin part before effortlessly re-knitting themselves back together in seconds. You smile in victory as you draw yourself up to your full height, your ghostly form expanding rapidly to take up most of the width of the dark, dank corridor that you call home. Your eyes blaze as if aflame in the blackness, and your body assumes a deep shade of purple that crackles with lustful power. You launch yourself towards the cornered adventurer with a swoosh.
Mélanie ducks at the last moment, her body a twisting spiral as she glides underneath you in a graceful flourish, before sprinting off towards the exit behind you. Your aching tendrils extend and lash out, grasping her wrists and ankles as if of their own accord, but your momentum is too firmly directed elsewhere, and after a tense instant, she yanks herself free and bounds away. You turn in shock and frustration, and quickly make after her, but your phantasmal body, for all its strengths, is not one built for speed. You curse, but...no matter! The archer has little chance of escaping you in the narrow, winding tunnels that slalom out behind you, and you glide after her as fast as you can, although this is little faster than a human jog. You smile devilishly as you hear her footsteps slow down gradually, and then stop...she can't be far ahead...
Mélanie springs out of the darkness once more, and this time towards you! You thrust forward, arms outstretched, but the rogue avoids them, instead barrelling straight through not only your eager hands, but also then passing through your porous body, emerging unscathed on the other side. Away she goes! Like an arrow launched from the string, she doubles back the way she came, her ever fleet footfall leading her ever further from your clutches. You halt, winded but the sudden intrusion, and clasp at your unsubstantial chest as it reforms itself like a cloud of smoke billowing back into place after a sudden gust of wind. You look back, but Mélanie has already fled beyond your sight, and the chances of you finding her again in this maze of tunnels is minimal now that she has such a head start. Fuck! You managed that situation with all the skill of a fresh-faced necromancer apprentice trying to throw himself on a beautiful, battle-hardened paladin knight. Well, maybe a little better than that, perhaps. A few of your friends got themselves killed that way when you were young.
In any case, you give up the ghost for good this time, and return miserably to your dark chambers. You feel the spirit's consciousness reclaim its body with a great and proud sense of relief, as if throwing off the shackles of a despised intrude. Maybe you'll find a slightly more willing host this time.
Which creature, then, will be the next host for your all-seeing spirit?
