Let them finish talking

You can't bring yourself to do it. Besides, they're just talking right? Not like there's a real connection there like she has with you. There conversation continues.

"The college in town is super affordable. Plus I've always dug the small town vibe," Tori explains.

"Ah, college girl? I just got out 2 years ago. Top of my class at Brown University," Derek not-so subtly bragged.

"Oh my god, you went to Brown? That's so cool! Why didn't you just stick around there?" Tori asks.

"I guess you could say I missed the small town vibe," he jokes. "Well, I should probably get going. I'll take a medium black coffee to go, please."

"What? Oh!...right I'm working right now sorry. Totally got distracted there. Ok, you said a black coffee right?" Tori asks somewhat frazzled.

"Yes ma'am. Real men only drink coffee black as night."

"My dad says that too," Tori says with a smile.

She runs off to pour his coffee. Derek heads to the other side of the counter you're at to pick it up. On his way there he finally notices you.

"Holy shit, Adam? It's been forever. How ya been?" He asks with a friendly smile.

"Hey, Derek. Didn't know you were in town. Visiting your parents?" You ask back.

"Nah, I'm moving back here. Providence was a fun change of pace but it ain't home. What about you?"

"Never left. Went to the local community college. We can't all afford universities like Brown," you say with a small amount of contempt in your voice.

"Didn't anyone ever tell you it's rude to listen in on other people's conversations? Would hate for you to offend the wrong person. Might not end so nice." Derek puts his hand on your shoulder. From a distance it probably looks like a friendly gesture. But his grip tells you the opposite.

Just then, Tori came over with his coffee.

"Here you go, sir. Oh, do you two know each other?" She asks.

Derek takes his hand off you and smiles, "We're old friends from high school. Just catching up. Oh, and you can just call me Derek miss..."

"Tori! Er-I mean not 'Miss Tori' just Tori," she stutters.

Derek looks at you and notice your enamored stare as you focus all your attention on Tori. In an instant he can tell you're madly in love with this girl. As if she wasn't hot enough on her own, the idea of her with another guy would surely devastate you. To Derek, that made her irresistible.

"Well it was nice to meet you, Tori. I hope I see you around," Derek says before heading out.

"Good to meet you too!" Tori exclaims.

You look at your watch and notice you're completely out of time. You wait for Derek to drive away then say goodbye to Tori and rush out the door.
