Chapter 20

Is there any trouble on the way back?

Just a little bit, nothing serious.

Things go smoothly on the way home, with the exception of some dumbass kid stepping on Martha's tail, and her saying "Ouch!" but by the time everyone turns and looks at her she is whining like an ordinary dog and you are holding your foot, saying "Watch where you step next time!"

If anyone realizes it was the dog that spoke instead of the humanoid cat, they don't comment on it, and you get home without further incident.

Back at the subway station near your apartment, you get ready to take the running leap to get back to the roof, then realize that carrying Martha that may not work. However you decide to try it on the grounds that if you cant carry a largish dog you certainly wont be able to rescue PEOPLE, and make the jump to the first roof. You are very glad that the buildings here are only 4 stories tall, instead of the 7 and 8 they get closer to down town, because you barely make it, but the run across the rooftops proves much easier, and you get to your own building just fine, excpt the leap across the street to get to the building next to yours, which once again you just barely make with the dog in your arms.

Back in your apartment you and Martha fall to talking, for a while, and she tells you about the first family that adopted her, and how one day she woke up outside a store with TVs in the window here in Millennium, and wandered the streets for days, unable to talk until Jesus found her and fed her alphabet soup on a hunch. After a little while you realize you are very tired again, and fall asleep, telling Martha that the couch is hers until you can rent a storage unit to move the stuff in the spare room into and/or move into new digs.

You wake about an hour later to the intercom from the front desk buzzing, and pad out to answer it. "Hello?" You ask, sleepily.

"There are some men with a limousine out front who say they are here to pick you up for an interview?" The doorman asks.

~Shit! I totally forgot about the interview! Curse this catlike sleeping schedule!~ You think and say "Tell them I will be down in five!" Then rush to change into your business suit from your old job, which doesn't fit quite right, and not just because of your tail.

"Come on Martha, interview time!" You say as soon as you are properly dressed, and take her walking down to the front lobby, where the two of you are shortly escorted into a limo, the vultures being kept back by about six burly men in cheap black suits.

So, off to the interview, but first you will have to be prepped and go through makeup and wardrobe...
