Jonathan Edwards was born mute; he was never able to speak, and will never know what it's like to have a normal conversation with another human.

But while he lacks the vocal ability most everyone has, he was blessed in another department—the power to speak with his mind. Yes, he was a mutant, or somewhat with powers, fuck if he knew the appropriate term.

And no, he is no telepath. He cannot control objects with his brain... Unless that object is someone's mind. In other words, while his vocal voice is lacking, his mental voice is loud. So loud, any mind that hears it will believe that it is thinking the same thing.

If John wants free food, he can focus on the barista. Tell her mind that, "You want to give me the biggest thing on the menu." Her brain will hear that thought and recite it.

Next thing John knows, he's eating for free.

A problem could arise when the ones around begin to question the barista's odd behavior, and since John can only focus on one mind at a time, he might be in for trouble.
