Chapter 7 by AbachiiWolf AbachiiWolf

Will John figure out the truth?

John doesn’t figure out that he’s a Mutant

John let out a small laugh thinking that he was a Mutant.

“What is so funny?” Lara asked.

“It’s nothing,” he gives a response.

“If it’s nothing then why did you laugh?”

“I thought it would be funny if I was a spy.”

“That’s true,” she said, starting to laugh at him. “You don’t look like a typical spy.”

John felt a bit of pain inside. The comment of him being a spy was just a spur-of-the-moment, but he didn’t like the way she laughed at him. They were supposed to be friends, as John thought. He wished to himself Lara would forget the idea of being a spy. As the thought entered his mind, Lara suddenly stopped laughing.

“What was I laughing about?” An inquisitive look appears on her face.

“Nothing,” John didn’t want to question why she forgot. “I was wondering what was I like in school?”

“I cannot remember. I know you helped me with the bullies, but it’s like you disappeared after that. I’m sorry that I couldn’t remember anything else.”

“That’s okay.” John felt sad after hearing what she said. Then an idea came to him. “Could you try to remember a different moment in your life?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Well, I just thought if you focused on something that happens like before. You could remember something else.”

“I think it might work.”

She closed her eyes and thinking about her past. As John watched her concentrate, he wondered how was she in high school. An image of her appearing in a frilly dress. She moved from side to side. While her arms were wrapped around someone in a tuxedo. That person’s face was completely blank. It scared him looking at that face. John thought his face would be better than having nothing. The empty face started to morph into John. People started appearing around Lara and himself. A voice called out to the prom king and queen. The image began to change to where both the image of Lara and the image of John were crowned as the king and queen.

“John,” someone was calling him. “John, wake up.”

He blinks his eyes open to see Lara have a troubled expression.

“I remember that you were my boyfriend during our senior year of high school,” she stated. “And we become the prom king and queen.” Her expression became more troubling. Looking at her hand, she notices her ring as though it is the first time seeing it. She quickly tries to remove it.

“Lara, what are you doing?” John was confused on why she looked so frustrated

“This ring is a lie,” she yelled.

“Calm down otherwise you are going to rip your finger off.” John grabbed both of her hands to pull them apart. “Lara, tell me what’s wrong?”

“John, do you remember me?” She said hoping that her question would get through to him.

He shook his head in response. Her expression became sad and tears started to form. The tension in her arms began to relax. John slowly moved them to her side. At that moment, she was crying.

“Why does it have to be this way?” She asked to no one in particular. “Why did this happen?”

“What are you talking about?” John inquired.

Lara caught his face in her hands. Then lead-in to kiss him. John immediately leads back. Lara looked even more hurt by this.

“John, please remember me!” She said pleadingly. “We started dating in high school and we continued dating after we graduated. You proposed to me two years later. We even got married in the same year.”

“Sorry, I don’t remember.”

“It was probably him who took away our memories. He’s the Mutant.”

“He who?”

“The one that is pretending to be my husband.”

“Are you sure? It’s a big deal being a Mutant.”

“Yes, and Mutants are a big deal, that is what makes them so dangerous. Somehow this Mutant has altered our memories to where we forgot that we were together.”

“What do you think we should do?”

“I don’t know. Who knows how many he has under his control or what other power he may have?”

“Then you should stay here for the night.”

“What if he finds out about us? It’s too much of a risk. He could do something worse for you than losing your memories.”

“What is worse than losing someone that you care about? You are the only one that remembers me. I cannot lose you.”

They stared at each other’s eyes. No longer using words to express their thoughts. They knew what the other person was thinking. With a simple nod, they agreed.

“I’ll stay here the night,” Lara said. “But in the morning, I have to leave.”

“Okay,” John said.

“I will make the phone call.”

While Lara was calling her husband, John had this moment to think. He was angry at the Mutant that stole his life. A Mutant that tried to make him to run away. This night he was going to make Lara his. No one is allowed to steal from him.

What are Lara and John going to?
