Chapter 26

What will it be then?
It looks like they could need just a quick break after all
"I'll help you with the boxes in just a few sec." Jack promised, as he figured it was safer for him to carry them up the ladder to the attic himself. It looked like Jennie could need a quick break even more than he did himself though, and so he suggested that they took a few moments off, before they got started.
"Yeah, that's a good idea." She smiled at him thankfully, but instead of just grabbing a glass of water she ended up hogging one corner of the couch, and looked like she could fall asleep any moment. It wasn't even one of her favorite shows running at the moment, and apparently she was just getting drowsier by watching the local news, which was the only program that Jack himself just happened to be remotely interested in watching at the moment.
For this reason alone he'd soon joined her in front of the TV, and because of the rising temperature he was nearly starting to doze for a moment as well, if it wasn't for the sports coming up in that moment. It wasn't like he'd even cared about the local teams for a long time now, but for some reason he still tried to follow the news just to keep track of things, and soon he realized that he had one other reason as well these days...
"Uh, what time is it...?" Said Jennifer suddenly, as she seemed to wake up again, and tried to hold back a yawn while she looked for the clock on the screen. Soon she realized that she'd merely dozed off for some twenty minutes though, and she didn't look all that stressed about the fact she wasn't even finished with her room yet, at least while her father remained calm and quiet in the other end of the couch.
Jack himself had nearly forgot about the time and cleaning though, and for all his daughter could tell it must have seemed like he was completely absorbed by the match on TV, while in fact he was barely paying attention at all. Instead his entire attention was focused on the cute, and now rather familiar young reporter, who was currently commenting on the game.
For all it seemed he wasn't the only one looking her way though, and Jack wouldn't be too surprised if Samantha Hornes was about to have rocket-like start to her career, if all her viewers were just as taken by her voice and good looks as the supporters who were standing around her. It certainly made it even more bizarre to think Jack had caught her sneaking around in garden two times this week, and he couldn't stop thinking about what she could've been doing there in the first place.
"She's kinda cute, isn't she?" His daughter interrupted him a second time, and made him realize that he might have been just a bit too obvious, but instead of reproaching him in some way, she merely smiled as he looked her way and tried to pretend like he hadn't been staring at the girl on screen. It even seemed like his interest was making her happy for some reason, and he really couldn't find a good argument when she got up and told him that her boxes could wait until later, if he wished to wait till the end of the game.
So he kept watching for just a bit longer, to see if he could figure out anything else about this mysterious woman who'd been stalking his family, but in the end he really didn't learn anything new. Except for perhaps the fact she was born to the area, which he'd already figured by the way she spoke and just happened to literally show up on his doorstep every now and then.
And when he finally got out of the couch to do some work again, he found that Jennifer had somehow managed to take care of her boxes herself, though he suspected that she'd hid some in her room instead of carrying them all by herself to the attic. Just a few things less in her room was quite enough to make a difference though, so Jack didn't see any reason to try and make her tell him what else needed moving, and instead they decided to start with the lunch so that it would be done in time for the others who worked on the pool...
Does that mean they're almost done working for today though...?
Girls of Jack
One man's world has been turned upside down, but he may find hope in the most unexpected places.
A story which I hope to work on when I have the time for it. For now it's closed for others, but I'll gladly accept ideas and suggestions for how to improve or continue the story! I've now started adding conditions, which is how I planned it from the start. So far it's recommended to read without activating the play function, but please try it out if you want, and let me know if you find something odd about the scoring.
