It's All in the Eyes

Amanda is quiet as she checks her phone. I concentrate on zipping through the familiar streets of my neighborhood to get home before that lummox Kevin. For some stupid reason I felt a bit of pride was on the line, even though this juvenile race hadn't even been my idea. Checking the rear view I notice Kevin's big jeep miss a turn, he was taking a short route but one I knew was riddled with traffic lights and crosswalks. I am feeling pretty pleased with myself as I pull into our driveway with Kevin nowhere in sight.

I put the car into park. "We win."

Amanda looks up. "Ha ha! Nice." She says and puts her phone away. "That'll bug him. He's real competitive."

After a few moments I wondered if "bugging" the musclebound Kevin was actually such a good idea. We get out of the vehicle and slowly make our way toward the door, I was purposely stalling to watch for my wife and her ride. When we get to the door and I still hadn't seen them I began to worry. What was taking them so long.

I stand on the front step and look left and right. Amanda meanwhile was checking out the house.

"Nice place." She says. "Way nicer than ours."

"Uh, thanks." I say, peering down the street. "Wonder what's taking them so long."

"Ha!" She laughs. "With my husband driving, who knows." There is brief silence as she looks me up and down. "He likes you you know. I can tell."

"He does? Well...good. I'm glad we can all get along."

"Ohhh, we're gonna get along just fine I think." She chuckles. "Kevin was the one who chose you guys. I wanted a younger couple, no offense."

"Er, none taken." I say, maybe a tiny bit offended. "I understand. We had the chance at an older couple too, chose you guys."

"I'm not complaining. Camille's hot and you're pretty good looking." She leans against the railing by the step and looks out over my lawn. "It was the green eyes though. Kevin's a sucker for green eyes."

"Uh huh." I say, only half listening. Where the hell were they? Both my jealousy and just my general concern for Camille's safety were rapidly increasing with each passing second. She was with a man we'd just met and I had no idea where they were. I wondered if I should call her.

At last. I hear the jeep even before I see it. Swinging around the corner at the end of the block I watch as the massive 4x4 roars down the street before coming to an abrupt stop. The stereo inside the vehicle is pounding dance music and I could see Camille dancing in her seat, her dark hair flying around as she bopped to the beat. A moment later the music dies and the engine is shut off.

Kevin jumps out his side first and hurries around to the passenger side. It was quite a drop from the cab to the ground. Kevin reaches up and takes my wife by her slender waist and sets her down on the sidewalk as easily as he would a baby. The dude was as strong as he looked. Camille giggles and thanks him. Just they way they talking and the body language between them I could tell the pair of them were getting on fabulously. He rests his muscular arm over her shoulders and she slides hers around his waist and then they approach.

"Fuck there are a lot of red lights!" Kevin gripes as he points my direction. "Unfair bro, you knew a shortcut."

"We won, fair and square." Amanda shoots back.

"Nice place!" Kevin says.

"I know, right?" Amanda grins.

My focus was entirely on my wife. As she gets close I look hard into her deep blue eyes, looking for any signs of doubt or worry or second thoughts. She looks back at me with a warm reassuring smile. She gives me a little nod, letting me know all was fine. She was more than okay, she wanted this to happen. She clearly liked the young couple.

I take a breath and steel myself. These two would be quite the experience I was sure but we had made it this far and I wasn't going to be the one to ruin the evening. I build up my resolve once more. My heart is pounding. This was all incredibly exciting.

As I turn back toward the house and unlock the deadbolt something niggles at the back of my mind.

Kevin chose us, specifically us, because he was "a sucker for green eyes". But Camille's were a rich blue, it was my eyes that were green. I shake the thought from my head. Amanda had clearly gotten mixed up.

I swing the door wide and motion the others to enter. "Welcome!"

Kevin and Camille walk past and into the house. Amanda slips her arms around mine and we follow them in.
