Introduction part 2

The discovery on mars changed everything. Deep beneath the red planet's surface, we found a treasure trove. Futuristic weapons, new power sources, but most important of all, schematics for a faster-than-light engine. Mankind threw all their resources into the project, forgetting their earthly concerns and turning their heads to the stars. Despite this, however, our solar system simply lacked the resources to construct the FTL drive. So mankind, never to be kept down, turned their attention to a new pursuit. If they could not send out a ship, they would send out a message. Two years later, in 2030, mankind's first faster-than-light transmission went out, stating simply: "We are humanity. If you are out there, come find us."

Three weeks later, an alien vessel arrived in the Sol system. The nations of the world, in an attempt to show the visitors the diversity of mankind, created a lottery. Those who won the lottery, in addition to the various world leaders and military officials that protocol requires, will make first contact.
