Amelia's expression lowers.

"I don't really want to think about my Conversions right now." She says quietly. "As I said, you've got to keep your mood high to perform well here. And thinking about the Bad Stuff isn't really helpful."

"Oh, I'm so sorry." Stacy looks down at the ground awkwardly. "I wasn't thinking."

"It's okay, you're new. You'll get used to what's a social faux pas around here soon enough." Amelia reassures her.

"I should go now." Stacy stands up decisively. "I've used enough of both of our time, and I have to go back to the Cashier Desk to borrow some more chips."

"So you do." Amelia says thoughtfully. "Do you mind if I come with?"

Stacy shrugs. "If you like."

The Cashier greets both women with a beaming smile.

"I need more chips." Stacy admits.

"Certainly! 1000 again?" The Cashier asks cheerfully.

"Yes please."

"Here you go!"

And with that, Stacy has another stack of chips.

"Well, that was easy. Almost too easy." Stacy says, turning to Amelia. "Now, where should I go next?"

"First, I want to show you something." Amelia says. "I've never done this with anyone before, but I've seen other people do it, so I know it's allowed."

She turns to the Cashier. "Please show Stacy here my Conversion Cards."

And then she turns back to Stacy. "Just please don't talk to me about them after you've read them. I really don't want to think about them while I'm here."

Stacy doesn't know what to say, so she doesn't. The Cashier hands Stacy three cards for her to read. She turns them over one by one.

She hands them back to the Cashier without a word. She has several burning questions she wishes she could ask Amelia now, but knows that doing so would break the agreement they just made.

But she has to keep it all inside, for Amelia's sake. Instead, she needs to find something else to say, to break this horribly awkward silence.

"I think I'm going to go try my hand at poker. I might not be great at it, but I'm probably a lot less likely to freak out." Stacy tries to stay casual and ignore the elephant in the room.
