The night finishes after the usual kick-outs of drunks and aggressive patrons. Nothing a normal Friday night doesn’t bring. I’m finishing off my paperwork for the night, using the bar to rest my folder on, when one of the barmaids comes up to me.

“So, who was that you were talking to?”

The girl in question is Holly. My ex. Sorta.

Holly and I were really close friends that used to hook up and developed genuine feeling for each other. Still, for whatever reason, neither of us were able to come clean to the other and say exactly what they were feeling and the whole relationship spiralled into a big mess of arguments and drama with each of us being angry at the other for not being mind readers and angry at ourselves for not being more courageous.

“She would be a new friend I made,” I tell Holly as she works behind the bar cleaning it up after trade. I take a moment to admire what I let get away from me for a moment. Holly is average height for a girl. Petite figured with extremely long bright blonde hair that she wears in a big braid that runs near the length of her back down to her pert apple shaped bum.

“I bet she is. And does this friend have a name?” Holly asks with an air of indifference that doesn’t feel sincere for a moment.

After we came apart Holly and I threw ourselves into relationships with other people. Holly in a shock began dating a fellow barmaid Jessica and I began seeing a string of attractive Asian women one after another. A trait that wasn’t lost on anyone I worked with.

“Her name is Jessica actually,” I say just as Holly’s Jessica joins her behind the bar.

Holly’s Jessica being taller with the base of her hair a buzz cut and the top dyed bright purple. The same lean physique and tanned surfer skin though.

“What’s this about me?” Jessica asks a little abruptly. Her and I yet to come to common ground over the fact Holly and I used to be intimate.

“Not you honey,” Holly soothes, “handsome over here made himself a new ‘friend’ tonight called Jessica too.”

“Don’t hear too many Asians called Jessica,” Jess retorts.

“Oh, she wasn’t Asian at all. A blonde white girl,” Holly informs.

“Hmmmm,” is Jessica’s only reply. No doubt her mind coming up with some sort of connection that includes me being interested in Holly once again.

“I think I’ll finish this somewhere else,” I announce to no one who’s listening to me now and make my way to a secluded part of the club, somewhere I won’t cause an argument between an ex and her new territorial partner.

I leave work that night without further incident, Jessica’s number saved in my phone, ready to text when it’s a more reasonable hour to come.
