Chapter 2

Well?
His only response was a wide grin.
The man from the farmhouse leaned forward, and rested his jaw on his hands A slightly manic light shone in his eyes. "Theo, I'm willing to wager everything. After all, I'm dead. I don't have much left to lose. So, what's the wager?" Tension seems to fly out of Theo's body, as he heaves a relieved sigh. "Well, it's rather simple, actually. All you have to do, is survive for as long as possible. A bit of advice, before you go, though. Build your foundation as much as possible, before you advance through the ranks."
A confused look forms on the face of the other young man, before he is sucked through a portal. Surrounding him is a maelstrom of energy, with no sense of reason behind it's elements. Tongues of fire freeze his flesh, while chunks of ice flow like the wind. Globs of darkness splatter against him like raindrops, and light forms layers as if it were ice. Instinctively, he knows that he is in incredible danger now. He can feel himself beginning to fray, as if he were a piece of fabric. In a moment of ****, mad genius he focuses on himself, on the core of his identity. A whispered thought flows through his mind, and he knows that this is the time to focus on refining his elemental affinity. However, he rejects that thought, willing to gamble on his decision to reject the affinities, and anchor himself. As the maelstrom batters him, he sinks deeper into it's core. The elements rage faster, and wilder. Their dance grows more frenetic, and he hurtles even faster to the core. Still, as he huddles himself, and focuses on his own identity, the elements begin to weaken against him. The freezing burn of fire fades, and the light begins to flake off. The darkness slides off of him, and the ice begins to gather in a swirling mass. Slowly, in that timeless eternity from the previous realm, the elements begin to stabilize around him. As the elemental cores begin to compress, the rest of the maelstrom begins to contract, and be gathered by the cores. Soon, the only things in this realm are the young man, and the elemental cores slowly orbiting him.
Finally, as the maelstrom has been completely absorbed by the elemental cores, the young man begins to wake. A sense of serenity pervades him, as he knows that his identity is completely under his control. Soon, that serenity begins to morph into unbridled ego, and euphoric arrogance. After a moment of indulgence, the young man swiftly tamps down those emotions, returning to serenity. He takes a last look around the empty realm, and something catches his eye. At the same time, a sense of rapidly growing danger reminds the young man that he has very little time. After only the briefest of thought, he flies to the item, and sees a tarnished brass locket. The scrollwork has almost completely worn away, with one clear exception. Circling around the width of the locket, as if to bind the two halves closed, is a single serpent, swallowing its own tail.
A flash of complete and total terror overwhelms the young man, and he vanishes from the empty void, taking the locket with him.
Where does he arrive?
