Chapter 8 by brambank brambank

Where should Leanne go?

Hide in a room

Leanne continued running down the corridor. Checking behind her every few steps for her pursuers who would surely not be too far behind. She turned the corner and was faced with yet more of the bleak, gloomy hallway and indistinguishable line of doors.

She couldn't continue like this forever, especially in just her underwear, and stared in bewilderment at the doors ahead of her. Any could lead to safety or, more likely in this place, something worse.

With no indication which door would be best, she turned to the nearest and grabbed the handle, but as she did she heard a strange scratching noise from behind it. Wondering if there was some kind of pet trying to get out she moved closer. Listening carefully to the sound with her ear pressed against the wood. There was definitely something there.

Forgetting for the moment about the chase she had become embroiled in, she tapped lightly on the door and jumped as she was replied by a hard thud. Nervously, Leanne listened again. There was a low growling noise. Almost like a dog. Maybe the animal was lonely and just wanted to get out. It seemed unlikely that there'd be a dangerous animal in Rosefield Manor so Leanne tried the handle.

Easing the door open she peered inside. "Hello?" In the dark room she could hear the same snarling she'd heard from outside and saw a pair of eyes watching her from the gloom. "It's okay." she said, holding her hand out. "I won't hurt you."

Suddenly the eyes darted towards her snapping ferociously. Leanne screamed and leapt back into the corridor falling on her pert rear. She stared fearfully towards the room as a vicious shape came charging towards her. However there was a metallic rattling sound and the animal's stampede was abruptly halted. It was stuck snarling at Leanne from the doorway. Drool dripping to her bare legs as it snapped at her.

Seeing the chain attached to the heavy collar around its neck and realising she was safe, Leanne scurried backwards and crouched against the far wall. The thing she'd heard definitely wasn't a dog. She wasn't even sure what it was. It stared at her with evil intentions. Hunched down in the entrance to the room. It had almost a human appearance to it, but much more wild. The front legs were similar to arms but wider, more muscular. Its face was flatter than a dog's but the mouth and nose still protruded out like a kind of snout. It had long thin hair on top of its head. As it snarled at her Leanne could see rows of jagged teeth and a long purplish tongue lashing out. The eyes that stared at her so viciously were a dark shade of yellow. The front and back legs culminated in feet with short digits that ended in thick claws. While its flesh was dark, almost black.

The chain continue to shake and snap as the creature tried manically to reach her. She began to wonder what the thing was and how it ended up in an old people's home. Stretching upwards, Leanne rose to her feet. Making sure to keep her back flat against the wall and as far from the monstrosity as possible.

She looked around the corridor. There was no sign of life, meaning no-one else had been disturbed by the ferocious snarling of the abnormal creature. She prepared herself to continue on her way, but it seemed dangerous to leave the door open like this. This thing could attack any unsuspecting person who came too near. However, she really didn't like the idea of getting close enough to shut the door again either.

What should Leanne do?
