Chapter 9 by amon_Baal amon_Baal

What does she hear?

Heavy footsteps

There was a heaving hollow clop and her heart froze. Quickly she dove behind the teacher’s desk hiding under the recess where the chair would normally sit. Her heart had started to pound as the doors to the classroom boomed open. The heavy clop came closer as Bethany crouched down to peer under the desk to look at what had entered the classroom.

I had crouched to enter through the doors, it stood about seven foot tall. It looked like a horse standing on its hind legs, though the front legs were atrophied and ended in claws instead of hoofs. Its head looked like a hybrid between a horse and a wolf, with long fangs overhanging the edge of its jaw. Its tail lashed about, two long snake-like lengths. Shaggy matted fur covered the rest of its body. “An Adar,” she thought to herself.

Adar were demonic soldiers with an insatiable appetite for carnage. They had not been seen in a thousand years, but they were controllable. Bethany cursed herself, if she had of grabbed the crystal when she had the chance, she could have already bound the creature.

The creature came closer, overturning tables and chairs with a clatter as it paced across the room.

She thought back to her training and the tomes she had read. Adars were difficult to control, but if she remembered correctly the spell was fairly simple, a ritual casting, though it was considered dark magic and required a sacrifice of flesh. Only a ritual sacrifice would be required, so if she could get to the gem, she would be able to use the shattered glass to cut herself and cast the spell.

The young student tried to calm her breathing, she had to risk it, but if the creature grabbed her she would be as good as dead. She was nearer to the crystal, but it was faster than she. She took a deep breath and prepared to run as she hear the creature panting as it stalked closer.

She curled her legs under her before launching herself forward. Her heart was in her throat as she heard the creature start to run, panting and screaming. She short sprint across the room seemed to take forever as the creature came ever closer. She grabbed the crystal of Urquire and turned to face the Adar as she screamed, “Hylyth Sebrim Adar,” and ran her free hand over the left-over glass shards of the broken cabinet.

Does the creature stop?
