Chapter 3 by ofhabit ofhabit

Which door do you take?

Head back up to ground floor, and then outside

You flip open the door and jump outside. You are bathed in the light: you forgot about the lights about all the entrance and exit doors to your apartment building (even though this is just a side door). You quickly jump into the bushes to the side of the door, and get down on your hands and knees, out of the light, behind the cover of the bushes, praying that no one saw you. You carefully crawl away from the door, grateful that there is soft mulch to crawl on, rather than rocks or noisy pea gravel.

You don't crawl away any too soon, as a pair of people walk out of the doorway, talking and laughing. You freeze, in an effort to remain totally silent, and apparently it works. The people walk on without paying you or the bushes any attention. You keep crawling.

You are a little ways down the side of the building when you hear someone walk up to the door, and stop, without entering. You freeze again, sensitive to the fact that you must be absolutely silent. You look back, over your shoulder. Standing in the door light is a tall young man, probably in his mid twenties (like you). He's attractive enough, and you recall passing him from time to time in the hallway. You get the impression that he probably saw you come out the door and jump in the bushes, though perhaps he didn't see it very clearly.

You are at a crossroads. You could remain silent, and motionless; it is doubtful that the man will enter the bushes. Or perhaps he has seen you already; who can tell what his actions will be, in that case? And, finally, you consider the fact that this is your first chance to expose yourself to a stranger. You had hoped for a little more anonymity, but then again, this guy is rather attractive.

Remain silent, or reveal yourself? Or are you already seen?
