That said, your boundless enthusiasm has led you to choose a rather challenging start to your adventure. The mountains toward the East were among the first parts of the old empire to be lost. Consequently, humanity was deprived of both a natural barrier to outsiders and the wealth of its richest mines. It’s hard to say what lurks in these mountains now. Rare metals are of little use to your subsistence-based society, so few have ventured to these parts, and they have yet to return.

To your knowledge, there are two ways through these mountains: the underground passageways through the mines and an overland pass. Information is scarce regarding both routes. You suspect neither will be easy.
