Chapter 21 by crunchyspag crunchyspag

What does he say?

He has one condition

The governor spreads his hands on the table in front of you and plasters on a fake smile. "My friend, you need not be so formal. Call me Maximilian" He taps his fingers, looking away. "As you may have guessed, my position affords me a respectable income, but not one so large that I can throw money about with reckless abandon." You stir from your seat, hand up to stop a rejection. He shakes his head placidly. "Please, sit. I do not mean to turn you away." You sit back down anxiously. "Now then. You say that your estate will bring much tax some day. Maybe so. But it may also be that I am removed from my position by then, no?" You hadn't thought of that. You nod, frowning your understanding. "However," he begins with fresh vigor,"you may remember a certain something I told you before. I have a daughter, Isabella. She has lived her whole life in the Americas, and I worry she would not like to return to Spain with us. Furthermore, her mother and I do care so for her happiness, and even though you are somewhat _impoverished_ at the moment," he says bitingly,"she would probably be happier with someone more her own age than an older, more successful match." You haven't seen this side of the gov- er, Maximilian before, and you don't exactly like it. "As such, I might be persuaded to part with my money if I considered it an investment in her future. Do you take my meaning?" You think you do, yes. "What exactly do you need from me?" you ask hesitantly. "I only ask that you meet her first, and I will loan you what you require, after my accountant verifies what is necessary, of course. There is no obligation on your part after that first meeting, but I do think it would be an excellent match."

It is a generous offer. The money you need, in exchange for only a simple meeting. Still, debt always serves as a heavy weight over one's actions, so perhaps you might feel too pressured as a result. Perhaps you don't want Maximilian as a father-in-law anyways, for he would almost assuredly hang this incident over you head for a long time to come. But without him, finding a line of credit in the small colony may prove difficult, and would almost certainly be under less favorable terms. Then, of course, is the matter of Yahima...
