Chapter 44

What's he supposed to say to something like that...?
He's had enough of her snooping around
"What about them...?" Jack heard himself grumbling, as he couldn't stop from glaring suspiciously at the young reporter before him, and he felt her sharp brown eyes observing him closely, while he tried his best not to think too much about all that happened since his wife had left him. She still seemed able to read him like an open book however, and he found himself shifting uneasily from one foot to the other.
"Well, just wondering." She finally smiled and shrugged at him, as if she'd really been asking for no specific reason whatsoever. That curious gleam remained in her eyes however, and Jack couldn't shake the feeling that she knew much more about him than he was fully comfortable with.
"Oh, look at the time!" The girl suddenly stated, with a quick look at the clock on the wall, and before he knew she'd already stood up from her chair and turned to leave. This abrupt end to their conversation caused him to nearly **** on the water he'd only started to sip of from his glass, and he wasn't sure if he should be relieved, or even worried, when it appeared like if she'd already got all the answers she came for. "Thanks for the water, Jack!"
"Hey...!" He managed to stop her, just before she was able to reach the door, but only received another knowing little smile in return when he tried to figure what she'd wanted with such a short visit. "What about your camera?"
"It can wait for later." Sam told him, without seeming to spend it a second thought, but then suddenly seemed to remember something else, and she paused for a second to fish out a small piece of paper from one of her pockets. "I almost forgot, but I actually came here to give you this."
"And what's that...?" Jack asked her with a frown, which deepened even more when he read the words on what looked like a cut-out advertisement from a newspaper. "A job application? Seriously...?"
"Well, I heard you... kinda got fired from your last one." She shrugged, which made him glare at her once again, as he wondered how she could possibly know something about that. On the other hand she was probably just doing her job, he figured, and keeping an eye on her interests was apparently another part of that, even if it did seem odd that she still wasn't more persistent about getting her camera back, with all of those pictures.
"So, now you're just taking pity on me?" Jack just gave her a sarcastic scoff in return, as he reached out to pluck the small piece of paper from her open palm, and simply crumbled it up in his own. "A bit too late for that, I'm afraid."
"Look, I'm really sorry for all that happened." The girl actually seemed like she was completely sincere when she told him, which stopped him from throwing the ball of paper directly in the trash, as he looked back to her friendly brown eyes. "But... would you really have preferred to keep it the way it was? Without ever knowing what Shirley had been doing behind your back?"
"No..." He shook his head slowly, as he knew full well that she was right about this. In a way he should be grateful to her, for the fact she'd exposed his wife's debauchery, although it was difficult to keep from blaming this girl for her part in the mess. But if this was her way of apologizing, then he guessed that he owed her one as well.
"Just make sure to talk to this guy!" Sam interrupted him, while pointing to the paper in his hand, then flashed him another mysterious little smile, before she turned to leave again. "And take care of your family, Jack!"
"... Sure." Jack nodded slowly, while still unsure of what to think of their strange conversation, and all he could do was to stare at her back as she walked down the driveway, until she disappeared around the corner of the hedges surrounding his house. For some reason he couldn't immediately focus his mind on their dialogue however, and instead he could only think of her cute face, and how her fine little bottom moved in skintight sweatpants...
So what should he do then...?

One man's world has been turned upside down, but he may find hope in the most unexpected places.
A story which I hope to work on when I have the time for it. For now it's closed for others, but I'll gladly accept ideas and suggestions for how to improve or continue the story! I've now started adding conditions, which is how I planned it from the start. So far it's recommended to read without activating the play function, but please try it out if you want, and let me know if you find something odd about the scoring.
