Chapter 26 by Absentedmindedspirit Absentedmindedspirit

Can Jorella arrive without incident?

Hardly

"Look at the woman!", someone shouted as soon as Jorella left the inn, "She lost ALL her clothes! Wasn't she that rich merchant?! Could she have lost it all in a single night?!"

Children begin jumping brightly colored ropes around Jorella as she tried to run from the taunts and jeers, but the kids kept bouncing in rhythm to an excruciatingly shameful rhyme,

"Naked merchant's got no clothes!

Now she's blushing like a rose!

She had a horse parading down the street!

Now she's running on big, bare feet!

Lost her jewels and lost her hat!

Lost her jacket, fancy that!

Showing her body everywhere!

BECAUSE SHE LOST HER UNDERWEAR!"

The last line is practically shouted into Jorella's ears she's unable to cover and hold up the barrel at the same time, so she must put up with peals of laughter and shrieks of, 'Slut!" "HARLOT!" "WHORE!" "HUSSY!" "JEZEBEL!", and taunts of, "You went from stinking rich to just plain stinking!"

"Aren't you a cloth merchant? What, don't get high on your own supply?"

The shame pushes her on though, sweat pouring down her forehead she'd be gritting her teeth, if she still had them!
Finally she arrives at the warehouse just as the clock tower begins to chime. Pounding on the door with one hand, looking back at the people laughing at her near bankruptcy while she holds her barrel for dear life.

After much longer than is necessary, Jorella is finally escorted in to receive her shipment.

How's her shipment?
