Chapter 4
by tantrikenetic
Which way, indeed?
Go to Cinderella's house.
"Cinderella's house is probably the best bet." You say. "The ball will most likely happen no matter what. If something's going to go wrong, it'll be with Cinderella and her step-sisters."
"Good idea." Doe says from your hands. She scampers off your palm and across your arm until she rests on your shoulder. It's only now you realize that you're wearing a new outfit that seems to fit an average midievil peasant. "I'll just stay here for now."
"Okay. Let's hope that having a rodent on my shoulder isn't too out of place." You remark as you head toward the castle. As you get over the first hill, you see a large town is surrounding the valley below the castle's plateau. You keep going until you reach the entrance to the town. "You know...I didn't think about this before, but how are we supposed to even find Cinderella?"
"I don't know, honestly." Doe squeaks.
"I mean, we can't very well go around asking if anyone knows were Cinderella lives. I don't even know what her real name is."
"I don't think the story ever supplied it."
"Well, what are we going to-" You are cut off as you hear some commotion from a small cottage a little ways down the road. You turn your head and see three women, one older and two younger, exiting the building.
"And while we are out shopping for dresses for the ball," the older woman was saying back into the cottage, "you must clean up this filthy, filthy house. I want you to scrub the floors until they shine like the moon."
"Yeah!" The taller of the two girls sneered. "And do all the dishes too!"
"And then do 'em again!" The shorter girl laughed with a snort. With that, the women slammed the door shut and headed off into the town.
"Well, that's awfully convenient." Doe said as you watch the women leave. They wall walked with a very haughty step, as if they were too good for the ground they walked on. All three had a certain beauty about them, but the stuck up presentation of that beauty turned you off immediatly.
"You think those were the step-mother and step-sisters?" You ask.
"Seemed like it to me. Didn't you get a 'wicked' feeling from them?"
"Yeah, but I kinda expected the ugly step-sisters to be...y'know, ugly."
"They're not ugly physically." Doe explains. "They're ugly people on the inside. Stuck-up bitches, if you excuse my language."
"Well, I think we just hit jackpot. Let's go pay Cinderella a visit, eh?" You walk down the cobble street to the cottage. You straighten your clothes, clear your throat and rap on the door. There is some scuffling from behind the door before it opens up, revealing a pretty girl with long dirty blonde hair tied back in a pony tail. She wore a dirty dress that seemed to be made out of rags and a ripped-up white apron. Her entire body, including her face and hair, was splotched with black soot as if she had just rolled around in a fireplace. She stood uncomfortably, shifting from foot to foot.
"Umm..c-can I help you?" She asks meekly, looking into your eyes. You open your mouth and realize you're not sure what to say to her.
What should you say to her?
