Chapter 9 by tantrikenetic tantrikenetic

Which way should prove to be the better option?

Go see Scott and Dirk.

You head out across the hall to see Scott and Dirk. They have always been good friends to you, despite your aversion to **** and their apparent reliance on them. You know you can count on them to help, but as far as help goes, they can be pretty sketchy.

You knock on the door lightly. You hear some light mumbling and after a few minutes the door slowly opens. Much to your suprise, you are not greeted by the usual plume of smoke. Instead, you face a tall, lanky individual with long dreadlocks and bloodshot eyes. He's wearing green boxers, but nothing else. He squints at the intruding hallway light and lets out a low groan.

"Jack-man." Scott says, drawing out each syllable. "It is way too early in the morning for conversation, man."

"It's ten o'clock, Scott." You say.

"Whoa...it's even earlier than I thought."

"Look, I'll make this quick and you can go back to sleep. Do you have a thermometer I can borrow?"

"Huh? Sure, man." Scott says and disappears into his room. You raise your eyebrows in surprise. That was shockingly easy. You were expecting some kind of asinine exchange between the two of you.

Scott eventually returns with a bulky piece of equipment in his hands. It's a large mercury thermometer in a plastic shell with sticky cups for sticking to windows. "Here ya go, man. We use this to make sure we're not burning too much of the you know what."

You groan and slap your forehead. "I meant for taking someone's temperature, Scott."

"Oh, well why didn't you say so in the first place?" Scott asked with a laugh. "In that case, no."

"Ah, that was the response I was expecting." You mumble.

"Nothing cures what ails you like Nurse Mary Jane." He slaps you on the back jovially. "I'm talking about weed, dude."

"I get it, Scott." You tell him. "I get it."

"Sorry I can't help you out. Is Melody sick?"

"Yeah, I think she's running a fever."

"I can send her over a blunt." Scott offered.

"Thanks, but I don't think that's what she needs right now, Scott."

"Why don't you just go to the nurses office?" A second voice said. You look past Scott and see another guy in blue shorts and a tanktop sitting up on the edge of his bed. He runs his hands through his mess of bed-hair. "They have to have that kind of stuff."

"They're closed on the weekends, Dirk." You sigh.

"Oh, is that all?" Dirk asks. He gets up, goes over to his dresser and fishes is out a key ring. He walks over, all the while searching through every key merticulously. He eventually finds the right one, pulls it off the ring and hands it to you. "Nurses office, back door."

"Are you serious?" You ask, your voice a whisper.

"Oh yeah. Do you know they stockpile medicinal marijuana in there? It's crazy!" Scott says. "Don't freak about cameras either. They unplug them on the weekends to conserve electricity."

"This can't be legal." You mutter, taking the key regardless.

"Don't worry, man. Dirk would never led you astray." Scott vowes.

"True words. We watch out for our own. Just return the key when your done, cool?" Dirk gives you a grin. You find yourself nodding and before you know it the door is closed and you're standing in the hallway staring at the silver key in your hand. Are you really contemplating breaking and entering for a friggin' thermometer? Would Melody be impressed or revolted? You slip the key into your pocket as you make your final decision.

To steal or not to steal?
