Go a little farther, at least

I walked carefully along the path deeper into the jungle. The growth only seemed to thicken, but I thought I could find my way as long as I stuck to the areas that were best lit. Thinking along these lines led me to a clearing off the main path that I hadn't noticed before. As I was walking along, I could see what appeared to be a brighter area off to my right. Peering through the foliage, an opening in the overhanging leaves showed a clearing. On the far side of the clearing was a rock face, with a small stream trickling down it into a pool.

I was unable to see the whole clearing from the path, but I heard off to one side what sounded like a light splash. Maybe someone is having a midnight swim after all?
