Go See Your Best Friend

You can't face your sister, not yet. You can't tell her that you won't be there to hand her off at her wedding as you had promised, so you jump into your car and head to your best friend, Maddie's house.

The drive was short, traffic seemed to be on your side at least, even if the rest of the world wasn't. You pull into the apartment complex where Maddie lives.

With your car parked, you make your way up the staircase to the fourth floor before it occurs to you. Maddie might not even be home. Regardless, you walk down the hall to her door, pausing before you knock.

Should you tell her?

It seemed unfair to tell her. Not now that you were dying. Not now that she had a boyfriend, but that was exactly your problem. You always waited to tell Maddie how you felt.

Without making a decision, you knocked on the door.
