Glace, the Blue Planet

Glace rhymes with lace.

It is a planet with no vegetation. There are lots of rocks and minerals and metals. The planet has many vast oceans and seas.

Why are there no plants? The sunshine is all wrong. The radiation is too high for plants, not enough to kill the Glacians, the people who live here. Food is found in the ocean where the water moderates the waves of radiation. Deep in the ocean you can get a few plants to grow at depths too deep for Glacians to dive. The foundation of the food chain is plankton. Fish eat the plankton. Glacians eat the fish.

Glacians live along the coast so that they can eat seafood. They then go deeper inland to mine for the metals the planet is known for. Glacians have strong saliva that can dissolve rock. That's how they get minerals into their diet.

Metalworking is the number one industry, followed closely by mining. Metalworking is a skill as old as time on Glace. They've always known how to do it. All of their early clothes were made from metal. Pounded into shape like plate armour. Then eventually weldable. Then sheets like foil. Finally they learned how to make metal threads which could be woven.

As for the people themselves, they all have blue hair, light, bright blue like the colour of a freshly opened glacier. This is the dominant gene of this race. Skin colours and eye colours can vary. But they all have blue hair.

A few decades ago, baby boys stopped being born. No one knows why. It didn't seem there was anything medically wrong with anyone. But the genetic probability was that Glacian women would give birth to baby girls. Even Glacian men would father girls. They tried procreating with the other races in the solar system, but it has been a near-steady stream of girls. The blue hair stays too. The shade may change, but it takes generations for any new colors to assert themselves over the Glacian gene for blue.
