Chapter 3

Her name tag reads "Alley." Alley looks like she could use some cheering up.
Give her a smile.
If this girl is working registration for the incoming residents, then she must at least be a sophomore. She might not take too kindly to freshmen trying to make a pass on her, but there isn't any harm in giving it a shot, right?
With a smile and a friendly "Hey," you stoop down just enough to see Alley's downtrodden face. She raises her eyes from the paperwork with a "Gawd, not another lame pick-up line"-type look. In fact, there's probably very little you could say that she hasn't heard and rolled her eyes at before. You might try something different instead...
Alley looks up at you, not quite sure of what to make of your big, toothy grin. "What?" she asks, still frowning. Ordinarily you'd answer, but you keep silent, actually smiling even wider and goofier than before. She probes herself, thinking there must be something weird on her face or in her hair.
"What?" she asks again, with a very slight ring in her voice, the austerity just beginning to crack.
"Oh, I just wanted to see you smiling," you answer plainly. Alley's eyes light up in surprise, though she only allows a smirk, as if to say, "Nice try." Still, she does not hesitate to take your hand as you introduce yourself.
"Alley," she replies, grinning politely and shaking firmly. Then she hands you your room key and your papers. "Well it was nice meeting you," she adds, not hesitating one second to shoo you out of line.
It's a tad disheartening to have been brushed off so quickly, but at the very least you tried. You did, afterall, get her to smile, even if it was just a little sarcastic one. Who knows, maybe you made her day, though she might not act like it. Oh well.
Head upstairs?
